Description: Despite recent dramatic advances in computer security regarding the proliferation of services and applications, security threats are still major impediments in the deployment of these services. Paying serious attention to these issues, Security in Distributed, Grid, Mobile, and Pervasive Computing focuses on the increasing demand to guarantee privacy, integrity, and availability of resources in networks and distributed systems. A rich and useful presentation of strategies for security issues, the book covers each computing area in separate sections. It first reviews security issues and challenges in content distribution networks, describes key agreement protocols based on the Diffie-Hellman key exchange and key management protocols for complex distributed systems like the Internet, and discusses securing design patterns for distributed systems. The next section focuses on security in mobile computing and wireless networks, covering wireless authentication methods, secure data aggregation, and anonymous routing protocol. After a section on grid computing security, the book presents an overview of security solutions for pervasive healthcare systems and surveys wireless sensor network security. With more and more vital information stored on computers, security professionals need to know how to combat threats and complications. Offering strategies to tackle these issues, this book provides essential security information for researchers, practitioners, educators, and graduate students in the field.

Notes: Transient dielectric measurement is used to study the transitions among the planar, focal conic, and homeotropic states of cholesteric liquid crystals. If the initial state is the field-induced homeotropic state, at low bias fields, the liquid crystal transforms to the planar state in a sequence of homeotropic-transient planar–planar; at high bias fields, the liquid crystal transforms to the focal conic state. The homeotropic-transient planar transition is on the order of 1 ms while the homeotropic-focal conic transition is on the order of 100 ms. Large hysteresis is observed in the transitions between the homeotropic and the focal conic state. Based on the rapid homeotropic-transient planar transition and the hysteresis effect in the focal conic-homeotropic transition, we have designed a drive scheme which can address bistable reflective cholesteric displays at the speed of one line per millisecond. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Cholesteric liquid crystals possess a helical structure and exhibit two stable states at zero field: the planar texture and the focal conic texture. In the planar texture, they reflect circularly polarized light, whereas in the focal conic texture, they scatter light in forward directions. They can be switched from the planar texture to the focal conic texture by a low-voltage pulse and switched from the focal conic texture to the planar texture by a high-voltage pulse. The wavelength of the reflected light is easily adjusted by varying the pitch of cholesteric liquid crystals. They can be used to make reflective displays that do not need a back light and have a good readability under room-light conditions. We first review the optical properties of bistable cholesteric reflective displays and discuss the techniques used to achieve high contrast and large viewing angle. We then discuss the transitions among the cholesteric textures and the drive schemes used to address bistable cholesteric reflective displays.

    Notes: CaRAlO4 (R = Nd, Sm, Y) ceramics with a K2NiF4 structure were prepared by a solid-state reaction approach, and their microwave dielectric characteristics were evaluated, along with their microstructures. Dense CaNdAlO4, CaSmAlO4, and CaYAlO4 ceramics were obtained by sintering at 1425°–1500°C in air for 3 h, and good microwave dielectric characteristics were achieved: (1) ɛ= 18.2, Qf= 17 980 GHz, τf=−52 ppm/°C for CaNdAlO4; (2) ɛ= 18.2, Qf= 51 060 GHz, τf=−3 ppm/°C for CaSmAlO4; and (3) ɛ= 18.9, Qf= 39 960 GHz, τf= 6 ppm/°C for CaYAlO4.
