Notes: The proportion of Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides, caught around South Georgia in the south-west Atlantic, with empty stomachs was much lower in fish caught in pots compared to longlines (28 and 91%, respectively, of examined individuals). It is hypothesized that pots caused reduced levels of stress on capture. Stomach content data examined from pot-caught fish will probably therefore be more comprehensive than that from fish caught using longlines. A wide range of prey items was identified in the stomachs of D. eleginoides and stomach contents of individuals caught using the two fishing methods were significantly different. The most common prey item for D. eleginoides caught using pots was the decapod prawn Nauticaris sp., which was restricted in location and depth. However, prawns were not common in the stomachs of D. eleginoides caught from the same location using longlines. Stomach contents from the two fishing methods remained significantly different when Nauticaris sp. were eliminated from the assessment, although fishes then dominated the diet of D. eleginoides caught using either fishing gear. The study confirms that D. eleginoides is an opportunistic carnivore, and indicates that feeding habits depend on the local availability of food items, as well as factors such as depth and predator size. The potential ecological impacts of fishing for D. eleginoides on the South Atlantic ecosystem are discussed.

Notes: Summary Considering the analogy of a liquid surface to a stretched membrane, the theory of large elastic deformations is used to calculate the deformed shapes of sessile and pendent liquid drops of some polymers. In particular, the liquid drops are treated as highly deformable liquid-filled membranes that follow a neo-Hookean constitutive equation. Since, with the advent of sophisticated pressure transducers, it is easier to measure pressure accurately than to determine the curvature of the liquid drop geometry, the problem is formulated in terms of the pressure prescribed at the tip of the liquid drop with a varying hydrostatic pressure. The governing equations consisting of a non-linear ordinary differential equation and aVolterra type integral equation are solved numerically on a digital computer. Based on the solution of the governing equations, a procedure to estimate the surface tension of a polymer from the shape factor versus pressure curves is illustrated. Also, by increasing the pressure and by balancing the vertical component of the surface tension against the weight of a pendent liquid drop the size of a drop separated from a liquid column is predicted.

Notes: Abstract The acute effects of Aflatoxin B1(AFB1) were evaluated on C57B1/6, CBA/J, B10A and Balb/c mice challenged with a single intraperitoneal dose of the mycotoxin (60 mg/Kg animal weight). 90 mice per strain were divided into three groups of 30 animals each: the intoxicated group and control groups I and II. Intoxicated mice were injected intraperitonealy with AFB1 dissolved in corn oil, while control I mice received corn oil only (0.01 ml/g) by the same route. Lots of 10 animals from the intoxicated and control groups were sacrificed 24, 72 and 168 hours after challenge. Control mice II remained untreated and were used as standards of normality for biochemical (hepatic and renal function) and hematological evaluation. AFB1 was detected in the liver of C57B1/6 and CBA/J mice 24 hours (1.46 and 0.75 ng/g, respectively), 72 hours (2.30 and 0.08 ng/g, respectively), and 168 hours (2.18 and 0.25 ng/g, respectively) after challenge. The mycotoxin was also observed in the liver of B10A mice (6.20 ng/g) 72 hours post-injection. The most evident histological lesions were observed 168 hours after treatment in C57B1/6 and B10A mice. Serum levels of alkaline phosphatase in intoxicated C57B1/6 and B10A mice were significantly higher than those of control I and II animals. The histopathologic lesions and biochemical changes were very discrete in Balb/c and CBA/J mice. It is included that strains C57B1/6 and B10A are more susceptible than strains CBA/J and Balb/c to the acute effects of AFB1. Such difference probably reflects each strains's ability to biotransform and eliminate AFB1 and its metabolites.

Notes: Abstract Transitions in sarcomeric α-actin and cardiac myosin heavy chain (MHC) gene expression have been useful as molecular markers for the development of cardiac hypertrophy and failure. In simpler model systems, α-actin expression has been useful in delineating some of the molecular pathways responsible for its induction following growth stimulation in vitro. In this study, we report that the effects of adrenergic agonists on α-actin expression in neonatal cardiocytes is dependent upon the culture conditions. In cardiocytes plated at 5 x 104 cells/cm2, skeletal α-actin mRNA levels represent 47%, 37% or 42% of total sarcomeric α-actin accumulations following administrations of 4 μM norepinephrine (NE), isoproterenol (Iso), or phenylephrine (PE), respectively. Cultured cardiocytes treated with vehicle (ascorbate) only accumulated 19% skeletal α-actin. Under these tissue culture conditions, in contrast to data reported previously, skeletal α-actin expression is regulated by both α- and β-adrenergic agonist stimulation. Furthermore, we present data showing that an endogenous anti-β-MHC transcript is regulated by both pressure-overload- or thyroxine-induced cardiac hypertrophy. Although anti-β-MHC transcripts do not play a major role in regulating β-MHC gene expression, the presence of this antisense transcript is associated with a novel set of β-MHC degradation products. In vitro studies, where oligonucleotides complementary to β-MHC have been introduced into cardiomyoctyes, show that the mRNA levels of β-MHC are decreased by 14–21 % within 72 h after addition of the oligonucleotides. This result together with the presence of β-MHC degradation products suggest that endogenous anti-β-MHC transcripts may be involved in a post-transcriptional regulatory mechanism affecting the steady-state levels of β-MHC expression.

Notes: Summary A spectrophotometric method for the determination of palladium using 2-mercaptobenzimidazole is described. The orange-yellow colour developed in aqueous medium atph 1.0–2.6 by the addition of an alcoholic solution of the reagent, is measured at 380 mμ. The system is found to obey Beer's law. The interference limits of diverse ions are also given.

Notes: Summary 2-Mercaptoquinoline is introduced as a sensitive and selective reagent for copper and palladium. Spot test detections and spectrophotometric determinations of these metals have been carried out. 0.03 μg Cu at a limiting concentration of 1 ∶ 430,000 can be detected by the spot technique on a filter paper, and 0.025 μg Cu at a limiting concentration of 1 ∶ 106 by means of the spot plate method. Palladium was determined by measuring the optical density of the orange-yellow colour at 450 mμ developed in alcoholic medium at pH 1.4–2.8. The sensitivity is 0.009 μg Pd per cm2 (Sandell).
