Description: The Diyanqinamu porphyry Mo deposit in the southern Greater Khingan Range of the Central Asian orogenic belt contains 800 million metric tons (Mt) of ore with an average grade of 0.097% molybdenum. The deposit is hosted in Late Jurassic volcanic rocks of tuff, andesite, and volcanic breccia. Multiple-stage hydrothermal activities have resulted in propylitic, phyllic, and argillic alteration in this deposit. Five stages (I–V) of hydrothermal activity are identified. Stage I is represented by a mineral assemblage of epidote, chlorite, and magnetite, with some discontinuous barren veinlets of quartz + K-feldspar ± fluorite ± magnetite ± epidote ± chlorite. Stage II is marked by occurrence of quartz + fluorite + molybdenite + magnetite ± pyrite ± sericite ± siderite veinlets/veins with phyllic halos. Stage III consists of fluorite + siderite + quartz + molybdenite + pyrite ± ankerite ± calcite ± chalcopyrite veins that are commonly related to phyllic alteration and dissemination of fluorite in the altered rocks. Stage IV has an assemblage of fluorite + quartz + pyrite ± ankerite ± calcite ± molybdenite ± chalcopyrite ± sphalerite ± galena in coarse veins (10–20 mm wide). Stage V consists of narrow (≤5-mm wide) veinlets of calcite + fluorite + pyrite ± quartz. Molybdenite mainly occurs in Stages II and III. Re-Os dating results for molybdenite samples from these two stages yielded an isochron age of 156.2 ± 4.2 Ma (2 , MSWD = 0.96, n = 10). Most molybdenite samples have high 34 S values (≥8.4) relative to other sulfide minerals (i.e., galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite) of Stages II to V ( 34 S = 2.5–8.3, n = 22). Molybdenite also has low 207 Pb/ 204 Pb and 208 Pb/ 204 Pb ratios relative to other sulfide minerals although there are minor overlaps. In a diagram of 206 Pb/ 204 Pb versus 207 Pb/ 204 Pb, these Pb isotope data display a positive trend transecting the growth curves of crustal lead, which could be invoked by mixing of crustal and mantle sources with distinct Pb isotopes. In combination with the S isotope data and mineral paragenesis, we suggest that magmas were the main source of molybdenum, whereas other metals (i.e., Pb, Zn, and Cu) were possibly sourced from the country rocks.

Description: Ferroelectric materials are characterized by spontaneous electric polarization that can be reversed by inverting an external electric field. Owing to their unique properties, ferroelectric materials have found broad applications in microelectronics, computers, and transducers. Water molecules are dipolar and thus ferroelectric alignment of water molecules is conceivable when water freezes into special forms of ice. Although the ferroelectric ice XI has been proposed to exist on Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto, evidence of a fully proton-ordered ferroelectric ice is still elusive. To date, existence of ferroelectric ice with partial ferroelectric alignment has been demonstrated only in thin films of ice grown on platinum surfaces or within microdomains of alkali-hydroxide doped ice I. Here we report a unique structure of quasi-one-dimensional (H2O)12n wire confined to a 3D supramolecular architecture of H4CDTA, trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid; 4,4′-bpy, 4,4′-bipyridine). In stark contrast to the bulk, this 1D water wire not only exhibits enormous dielectric anomalies at approximately 175 and 277 K, respectively, but also undergoes a spontaneous transition between “1D liquid” and “1D ferroelectric ice” at approximately 277 K. Hitherto unrevealed properties of the 1D water wire will be valuable to the understanding of anomalous properties of water and synthesis of novel ferroelectric materials.

Description: The mammalian small ubiquitin-like modifiers (SUMOs) are actively involved in regulating differentiation of different cell types. However, the functional differences between SUMO isoforms and their mechanisms of action remain largely unknown. Using the ocular lens as a model system, we demonstrate that different SUMOs display distinct functions in regulating differentiation...

Description: Rapid access to genetic information is central to the revolution taking place in molecular genetics. The simultaneous analysis of the entire human mitochondrial genome is described here. DNA arrays containing up to 135,000 probes complementary to the 16.6-kilobase human mitochondrial genome were generated by light-directed chemical synthesis. A two-color labeling scheme was developed that allows simultaneous comparison of a polymorphic target to a reference DNA or RNA. Complete hybridization patterns were revealed in a matter of minutes. Sequence polymorphisms were detected with single-base resolution and unprecedented efficiency. The methods described are generic and can be used to address a variety of questions in molecular genetics including gene expression, genetic linkage, and genetic variability.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Chee, M -- Yang, R -- Hubbell, E -- Berno, A -- Huang, X C -- Stern, D -- Winkler, J -- Lockhart, D J -- Morris, M S -- Fodor, S P -- 5RO1HG00813/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1996 Oct 25;274(5287):610-4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Affymetrix, 3380 Central Expressway, Santa Clara, CA 95051, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8849452" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Nature Physics 11, 724 (2015). doi:10.1038/nphys3426 Authors: B. Q. Lv, N. Xu, H. M. Weng, J. Z. Ma, P. Richard, X. C. Huang, L. X. Zhao, G. F. Chen, C. E. Matt, F. Bisti, V. N. Strocov, J. Mesot, Z. Fang, X. Dai, T. Qian, M. Shi & H. Ding In 1929, H. Weyl proposed that the massless solution of the Dirac equation represents a pair of a new type of particles, the so-called Weyl fermions. However, their existence in particle physics remains elusive after more than eight decades. Recently, significant advances in both topological insulators and topological semimetals have provided an alternative way to realize Weyl fermions in condensed matter, as an emergent phenomenon: when two non-degenerate bands in the three-dimensional momentum space cross in the vicinity of the Fermi energy (called Weyl nodes), the low-energy excitations behave exactly as Weyl fermions. Here we report the direct observation in TaAs of the long-sought-after Weyl nodes by performing bulk-sensitive soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. The projected locations at the nodes on the (001) surface match well to the Fermi arcs, providing undisputable experimental evidence for the existence of Weyl fermionic quasiparticles in TaAs.

Description: We propose an accurate approach, based on the precise integration method, to solve the aeroelastic system of an airfoil with a pitch hysteresis. A major procedure for achieving high precision is to design a predictor-corrector algorithm. This algorithm enables accurate determination of switching points resulting from the hysteresis. Numerical examples show that the results obtained by the presented method are in excellent agreement with exact solutions. In addition, the high accuracy can be maintained as the time step increases in a reasonable range. It is also found that the Runge-Kutta method may sometimes provide quite different and even fallacious results, though the step length is much less than that adopted in the presented method. With such high computational accuracy, the presented method could be applicable in dynamical systems with hysteresis nonlinearities.

Description: An instrument used for measuring multiple scintillators’ light output and energy resolution was developed. The instrument consisted of a light sensor array which was composed of 64 discrete SiPMs (Silicon Photomultipliers), a corresponding individual channel readout electronics system, and a data processing algorithm. A Teflon grid and a large interval between adjacent SiPMs were employed to eliminate the optical cross talk among scintillators. The scintillators’ light output was obtained by comparing with a reference sample with known light output. Given the SiPM temperature dependency and the difference among each SiPM, a temperature offset correction algorithm and a non-uniformity correction algorithm were added to the instrument. A positioning algorithm, based on nine points, was designed to evaluate the performance of a scintillator array. Tests were performed to evaluate the instrument’s performance. The uniformity of 64 channels for light output measurement was better than 98%, the stability was better than 98% when temperature varied from 15 °C to 40 °C, and the nonlinearity under 511 keV was better than 2%. This instrument was capable of selecting scintillators and evaluating the packaging technology of scintillator arrays with high efficiency and accuracy.
