    Notes: Aromatic polyamic acid alkyl ammonium salt exhibits very good transfer behavior under suitable deposition conditions. A superconducting thin film of YBa2Cu3Ox (YBCO) on Langmuir-Blodgett film (LB) has been obtained when the substrate temperature is higher than 500°C. Superconducting edge junctions of (Pb - In)/LB/(Pb - In) and YBCO/LB/YBCO incorporated with polyimide LB films were fabricated. Their current-voltage characteristics are discussed in terms of the temperature stability of polyimde LB films. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Analytical solutions of film profiles and degree of planarization for periodic features during the spin coating process are presented. This article shows that the degree of planarization is independent of Ω2 and changes slightly with the dimensionless line spacing α for Ω2〉300. The governing dimensionless parameter Ω2 represents the ratio of centrifugal force to surface tension force during spin coating. In the cases of low Ω2 (Ω2〈1), the degree of planarization decreases with increasing α for a fixed Ω2. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to determine the vibrational energy relaxation rates for C–H,D,T stretches on hydrogen-, deuterium-, and tritium-terminated H,D,T/C(111) and H,D,T/C(110) diamond surfaces at high temperatures based on the Bloch–Redfield theory and the calculated power spectra of fluctuating force along C–H,D,T stretches. The lifetime of C–H stretches on H/(110) surfaces at room temperature was found to be 0.8 ps, which is much shorter than the calculated lifetime of 30 ps on a H/C(111) surface attributed to 1:3 resonance. This is due to the blueshift of the 1:2 resonance domain in the force power spectra for a H/C(110) surface. The lifetimes of C–H stretches on a H/C(110) surface and C–D,T stretches on both D,T/C(111) and D,T/C(110) surfaces, which all undergo 1:2 resonance energy relaxation, are all on the time scale of tenths of a picosecond at room temperature and are approximately inversely proportional to the square of the temperature at high temperatures. For C–H stretches on a H/C(111) surface, the lifetimes at high temperatures are shortened much further not only by the rise in the temperature but also due to the thermal broadening of the resonance peaks in the force power spectra. The characteristics of power spectra and the resulting relaxation rates were analyzed using a simple model of a constrained diatomic bond in a harmonic bending potential field. The present results suggest that, since the resonance frequencies of C–H stretches are located within the border region between the 1:2 and 1:3 resonance domains, the vibrational energy relaxation of C–H stretches may differ by more than an order of one on different monohydrided low index unreconstructed diamond surfaces in contrast to the lifetimes of C–D,T stretches on these diamond surfaces, which are all on the same time scale at a given temperature. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Purpose - The effects of thermal fatigue and printed circuit board (PCB) surface finish on the pull strength, failure modes and reliability of chip scale package (CSP) solder joints were investigated. Design/methodology/approach - Mechanical pull test, metallographic examination and electrical measurement were used. Tin lead (Sn-Pb) and lead free (Sn-Ag-Cu) alloys were used with Au/Ni and organic solderability preservative (OSP) surface finishes. Findings - The experimental results showed that the pull strength of the Sn-Ag-Cu/(Au/Ni) solder joint did not change noticeably with an increasing number of thermal cycles. However, the pull strength of the Sn-Pb/(Au/Ni) solder joints drastically degraded and that of the Sn-Ag-Cu/OSP and Sn-Pb/OSP solder joints slightly decreased during thermal cycling. For both Sn-Ag-Cu and Sn-Pb alloys, the solder joint fracture of as-soldered samples was the main failure mode when an Au/Ni surface finish was used. For the Sn-Ag-Cu/(Au/Ni) and Sn-Ag-Cu/OSP solder joints, the proportion of component trace tearing considerably decreased, whereas that of PCB trace tearing considerably increased, during thermal cycling. The Weibull lifetimes of the solder joints were increasingly longer in the order of Sn-Pb/(Au/Ni), Sn-Pb/OSP, Sn-Ag-Cu/OSP, and Sn-Ag-Cu/(Au/Ni). Research limitations/implications - This was not an exhaustive study and all of the findings are for lead free and tin lead CSP solder joints, which perhaps limits the usefulness of the results elsewhere. Practical implications - A very useful source of information and impartial advice for engineers planning to conduct a switch from tin lead to lead free technology in their production lines. Originality/value - This paper fulfils an identified information/resources need and offers practical help to an engineer starting out on an engineering development.

    Notes: Examines the relationships between cultural values and preferences for human resource management (HRM) policies and practices in a sample of Taiwanese employees. Specifically, seeks to examine patterns of Chinese national culture in Taiwan, to identify the preferences of employees for specific HRM policies and practices, and to explore the extent to which individual cultural value orientations shape individual preferences for HRM policies and practices. Presents findings from data based on 452 employees from the shopfloor to senior management positions in seven Taiwanese organisations. By controlling the measure of national culture in terms of value orientations, it is found that they account for from only 5 per cent to 10 per cent of the total individual variance in HRM preference. A factor analysis supports the view that national culture value orientations represent a separate construct to both work values and more traditional measures of work outcomes, such as job satisfaction and commitment.
