The alignment and condition of mitochondria in the epithelial cells indicate that secretion is apparently the chief function of the midgut and the attached caeca. In view of the response of these cells to vital dyes, and to various fixatives, other cell structures-particularly vacuoles-are uncertain evidence of cell activities. Many structures visible by means of vital dyes indicate changes in the permeability of the cell membrane, and subsequently in the cytoplasm. Hence, they are artifacts, just as truly as those found in fixed tissue.
