Notes: Abstract. We consider the following polynomial congruences problem: given a prime p, and a set of polynomials $ f_1,\ldots,f_m \in {\Bbb F}_p[x_1,\ldots,x_n] $ of total degree at most d, solve the system $ f_1 = \cdots = f_m = 0 $ for solution(s) in $ {\Bbb F}^n_p $ . We give a randomized algorithm for the decision version of this problem. For a fixed number of variables, the sequential version of the algorithm has expected time complexity polynomial in d, m and log p; the parallel version has expected time complexity polylogarithmic in d, m and p, using a number of processors, polynomial in d, m and log p. The only point which prevents the algorithm from being deterministic is the lack of a deterministic polynomial time algorithm for factoring univariate polynomials over $ {\Bbb F}_p $ .

Notes: Summary Electron microscopic study was made on the water reabsorption of the epithelial cells of the rat cauda epididymidis. It was shown that when the epididymal duct was reabsorbing water at a maximal rate, widely dilated intercellular spaces were seen. It is suggested that the standing gradient model of water reabsorption first proposed for the gall bladder may also operate in the cauda epididymidis.

Notes: A plasmid stabilization system, active in high copy-number plasmids, was cloned from the large resident plasmid, pSLT, of Salmonella typhimurium. The ytl2 gene, together with a 249-bp region (termed incR) downstream of the gene, imparted 〉104-fold stability to a pBR322-based plasmid. The ytl2-incR region was then used to stabilize a recombinant plasmid carrying the human epidermal growth factor gene (with the Escherichia coli K-12 ompA signal sequence), behind the lacUV5 promoter. In shake flask tests to optimize expression of human epidermal growth factor, loss of recombinant plasmid was 〈1% when growth (both before and after induction with isopropyl-β-d-galactopyranoside) took place even in the absence of antibiotic selection, and the specific activity of secreted human epidermal growth factor was ca 20 μg per 108 cells at harvest, compared to a figure of ca 3 μg per 108 cells when a comparable plasmid, but devoid of the ytl2-incR region, was employed, as outgrowth of plasmid-free cells after induction severely compromised the specific activity of the secreted product.

Notes: Abstract A catheter tip pressure transducer was testedin vitro to determine its stability, linearity and frequency response. It was then compared simultaneously with an oesophageal balloon in two trained adult subjects, using measurements of end-expiratory oesophageal pressure and the ratio of oesophageal pressure to mouth pressure changes during airway occlusion. This ratio should be unity, since during airway occlusion there is no flow and pressure changes should be evenly distributed throughout the closed system. The catheter tip pressure transducer was used in 13 infants, who were all studied initially with an oesophageal balloon, during the course of routine lung function tests. Measurements of pulmonary resistance, compliance, end-expiratory oesophageal pressure and the ratio of oesophageal pressure change to mouth pressure change were made with both instruments. The ratio of oesophageal to mouth pressure change and pulmonary resistance were elevated and dynamic compliance reduced when measured with the catheter tip pressure transducer, showing that the catheter tip pressure transducer was overestimating the size of pressure swings within the oesophagus. The absolute value of end-expiratory oesophageal pressure was always more positive when measured with the catheter tip pressure transducer than with the balloon, suggesting that absolute pressure was also incorrectly monitored. It is recommended that the catheter tip pressure transducer should not be used in studies of infant lung mechanics until these problems have been resolved.

Notes: The morphogenesis of glandular architecture of the three lobes of prostate gland of the guinea pig, lateral, dorsal, and coagulating gland was studied from 35 days gestation to 90 postnatal days. Epithelial ductal tubules of various lobes of the gland were microdissected after treatment by collagenase and displayed two dimensionally. The number of ductal tips was counted, and the volume of the ductal network was quantified using a graphic tablet. The results show that the growth and ductal morphogenesis fall into two phases: prenatal and postnatal. The first outgrowth of prostatic buds begins at 35 days gestation (gestational length is 65 days). Ductal growth and branching continues over the next 15-20 days and by 55 days gestation, approximately 60%, 79%, and 71% of the adult number of ductal tips of the lateral and dorsal lobes and coagulating gland respectively, are formed. The figures increase to 89%, 84%, and 106%, respectively, by birth. There is little increase in number of ductal tips thereafter. Postnatal growth is accomplished mainly by elongation of existing ductal network with a little additional branching but with an increase in size (volume) of the tubules. Canalization of ductal tubules occurs prenatally in all lobes but postnatal functional cytodifferentiation takes a slightly different pace among them. Ductal morphogenesis of the guinea pig prostate gland differs significantly in time-course from that of the mouse in which ductal development occurs mainly postnatally. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: The accessory muscle of the walking leg of the horseshoe crab, Tachypleus gigas, was examined electron microscopically. The muscle fibers vary in size but are small in diameter, when compared with other arthropod skeletal muscles. They are striated with A, I, Z and poorly defined H bands. The sarcomere length ranges from 3-10 μm with most sarcomeres in the range of about 6 μm. The myofilaments are arranged in lamellae in larger fibers and less well organized in the smaller ones. Each thick filament is surrounded by 9-12 thin filaments which overlap. The SR is sparse but well organized to form a fenestrated collar around the fibrils. Individual SR tubules are also seen among the myofibrils. Long transverse tubules extend inward from the sarcolemma to form dyads or triads with the SR at the A-I junction. Both dyads and triads coexist in a single muscle fiber, a feature believed to have evolutionary significance. The neuromuscular relationship is unique. In the region of synaptic contact, the sarcolemma is usually elevated to form a large club-shaped structure containing no myofilaments and few other organelles. The axons or axon terminals and glial elements penetrate deep into the club-shaped sarcoplasm and form synapses with the fiber. As many as 13 terminals have been observed within a single section. Synaptic vesicles of two types are found in the axon terminals.

Notes: Summary Ultrastructural localization of thiamine pyrophosphatase (TPPase) activity was studied in secretory cells of the lateral prostate and seminal vesicle of normal and castrated guinea pigs and castrates treated with 17β-oestradiol benzoate. The present study has demonstrated that TPPase reaction product is consistently localized in the three to four trans cisternae of Golgi complexes in both the lateral prostate and the seminal vesicle. The reaction was intense and the reaction product often filled the cisternae completely. After castration there was a decrease in TPPase activity in both glands as revealed by the reduction in the amount of the reaction product which was found mainly in one to two trans cisternae of the regressed Golgi complex. The reaction product changed from a dense to a more particulate or granular pattern or to discrete deposits of high electron-density. Administration of 17β-oestradiol benzoate to the castrates caused changes in the localization and patterns of distribution of TPPase. In the lateral prostate there was an apparent increase in TPPase activity. The reaction product was found in two to four trans cisternae and occasionally in the trans-most cisternae of the dilated Golgi complex. The reaction product appeared as discrete, dense coarse precipitates. In the seminal vesicle TPPase reaction product was consistently found in one to two trans cisternae in cells with larger Golgi complexes. However, almost all cisternae of the smaller Golgi complexes were TPPase-positive. The cytochemicl results of the present study suggest that TPPase activity and possibly the process of glycosylation in secretory cells of the lateral prostate and seminal vesicle may have been affected after castration and after oestradiol administration.
