Abstract Atomic shielding factors describe the effect of a deformation of the electron core on the hyperfine structure, which is important for the spectroscopic determination of nuclear moments. For the quadrupole moment they are known as Sternheimer corrections. Such shielding factors for free atoms are discussed in the picture of configuration interaction for the magnetic and electric hyperfine interactions. Calculations have been performed with central-field Hartree-Fock functions for B 2p, O 2p 4, Al 3p and the levels 3d5 4s 4p6,8 P of Mn. It is found that even configurations very high in the continuum are admixed by the perturbation, and that alltogether the contributions from these are much more important than those from bound states. The results are in good agreement with other calculations and they explain experimental data in O and Mn.
