    Description: This second edition of Measuring Nonuse Damages Using Conjoint Valuation is essentially a reprint of a 1992 monograph that has been in steady demand since its original appearance. The RTI Press edition, which is intended to meet continued inquiries and requests for the monograph, contains a Foreword and a Preface to the second edition that put the original work into historical perspective. These studies of ways to value stated preferences, as applied then to the Exxon Valdez oil spill, continue to be a timely and still-rigorous examination of such methods; even with the passage of time and statistical advances from the past two decades, the conclusions and insights as to whether and how these techniques might still be employed in valuing use or nonuse losses from similar events remain valid.

    Description: Glacioeustatic- and temperature-corrected planktonic foraminiferal oxygen isotope (dd18O) records from ODP Site 942 on the Amazon Fan provide a means of monitoring past changes in the outflow of the Amazon River. This study focuses on the last deglaciation and reveals that during this period there were significant variations in the outflow, which implies large changes in moisture availability in the Amazon Basin. Aridity in the Amazon Basin seems to occur between 20.5 ka (calendar) to 17.0 ka and 13.6 ka to 11 ka. The second arid period correlates with the start of the Antarctic Cold Reversal and aridity continues throughout the Younger Dryas period. We find that the large-scale trends in Amazon River outflow are dissimilar to high-latitude variability in either hemisphere. Instead high-resolution variations correlate with the d18O difference between Greenland and Antarctica ice core temperature records. This suggests a link between Hemispheric temperature gradients and moisture availability over the Amazon. Based on our results and previously published work we present a new testable 'dynamic boundary-monsoon intensity hypothesis', which suggests that tropical moisture is not a simple belt that moves north or south. Rather, the northern and southern boundaries of the South American Summer Monsoon (SASM) are independently dynamic and driven by temperature gradients within their individual hemispheres. The intensity of rainfall within the SASM, however, is driven by precessionally modulated insolation and the resultant convection strength. Combining these two influences produces the dynamic heterogenic changes in the moisture availability observed over tropical South America since the Last Glacial Maximum.

    Notes: A detailed experimental study is carried out to investigate the flow structure and heat transfer in a converging horizontal channel with localized heating on the bottom surface. This configuration arises in typical chemical vapor deposition (CVD) systems and the impact of the transport mechanisms on the deposition process is of particular interest. Experimental observations of various flow circumstances indicate the appearance of longitudinal and transverse roll structures. These flow structures have direct implications with respect to CVD processing where deposition rates and film quality are critically dependent on reactive species and byproduct transport onto the deposition surface. Different flow regimes are observed for typical operating conditions, and their existence is described using regime maps. Regime boundaries are correlated in terms of important parameters that describe the flow rate, heating rate, and tilt angle. A regime transition from longitudinal rolls to transverse rolls occurs at around Gr/Re2=6000, while the critical Rayleigh number is found to be dependent on the flow. Heat transfer correlations are also derived and it is seen that the heating rate is the dominant effect on the susceptor temperature, while the effects of flow rate and tilt angle are small. The implication of heat transfer results on mass transfer are discussed for horizontal CVD reactors. The flow structure and heat transfer phenomena observed in this study yield valuable insight into the basic buoyancy and forced-flow-induced transport in horizontal channels as well as guidelines for the modeling and design of CVD systems. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
