    Description: The geometry of channels controls the erosion rate of rivers and the evolution of topography following environmental change. We examine how sediment, slope and substrate interact to constrain the development of channels following deglaciation, and test whether theoretical relationships derived from streams reacting to tectonic uplift apply in these settings. Using an extensive dataset of channel geometry measurements from postglacial streams in the Scottish Highlands, we find that a power law width-drainage area scaling model accounts for 81% of the spatial variation in channel width. Substrate influences channel form at the reach scale, with bedrock channels found to be narrower and deeper than alluvial channels. Bedrock channel width does not co-vary with slope, which may be due to downstream variations in sediment flux. Bedrock channel width-to-depth ratios increase with discharge (or area) and sediment flux, consistent with increasing bed cover promoting lateral widening. We find steep, wide and shallow bedrock channels immediately below lakes, which we interpret as the result of limited erosion due to a lack of sediment ‘tools’. Where sediment supply is sufficient to exceed transport capacity, alluvial channels develop wider, shallower geometries constrained primarily by flow hydraulics. Our results indicate that simple scaling models of channel width with drainage area are applicable at regional scale, but locally channel width varies with substrate, and in the case of bedrock channels, with sediment flux.

    Description: When blood (plasma) contacts certain foreign surfaces, factor XII can activate and trigger a series of reactions leading to cleavage of kininogens with subsequent release of bradykinin. In this study, we investigated two different widely used leukocyte removal filters, Pall PXL8K (A) and Asahi PLS-5A (B), to test whether clinically significant contact activation occurred during leukodepletion of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Kininogens were measured by particle concentration fluorescence immunoassay (PCFIA), which can detect cleavage of high and low molecular weight kininogens (HK and LK), the parent molecules of bradykinin, to determine if contact activation had occurred. A slight, nonsignificant decrease in HK and LK was observed with filter A after the first 5 mL was filtered that returned to prefiltration levels by the end of the filtration. Specific TotK (the combined measurement of HK and LK heavy chains divided by plasma protein concentration) showed a small, significant decrease with filter A after the first 5 mL of platelet concentrates was filtered that returned to prefiltration levels by the end of the filtration. There were no significant increases or decreases in the cleaved kininogen index (CKI), an index of HK proteolytic activation or HK and LK destruction (with release of bradykinin). These data suggest that small amounts of both HK and LK initially adsorb to filter A and then desorb, primarily intact. These data also indicate that no significant contact activation, as measured by PCFIA, occurs during leukodepletion of platelet concentrates with either filter A or B.

    Notes: Polypeptide hormones, recognized for their ability to regulate cell growth and differentiation, have been classified as growth factors. These growth factors have been extensively described in higher eukaryotic organisms and cell lines [Hedin and Westermark, Cell 37:9-20, 1984]. Here we report the identification and partial characterization of a putative growth factor present in vegetative amoebae of the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum. A mutant was selected and found to be temperature sensitive due to the absence of an extracellular protein suggestive of a growth factor. The putative growth factor (DGF) is a protein resistant to both heat and strong detergent treatment but sensitive to reducing agents. The physiological significance of DGF is as yet unknown. DGF is of interest both in relation to understanding the events which control cell proliferation in Dictyostelium and in its relationship to other known growth factors.
