    Description: Actinobacteria are highly diverse prokaryotes that are ubiquitous in soil, freshwater and marine ecosystems. Although various studies have focused on the ecology of this phylum, data are still scant on the diversity, abundance and ecology of actinobacteria endemic to special and extreme environments, such as gut, plant, alkaline saline soil, deep sea sediments, hot springs and other habitats. Actinobacteria are well-known producers of a vast array of secondary metabolites, many of which have useful applications in medicine and agriculture. Furthermore, actinobacteria also have diverse functions in different environments apart from antibiotic production. For example, actinobacteria are reported to contribute to the break-down and recycling of organic compounds. They play a significant role in fixation of nitrogen, improvement plant growth, biodegradation, bioremediation and environmental protection. Therefore, understanding the actinobacterial diversity and distribution in such special environments is important in deciphering the ecological roles of these microorganisms and for biotechnological bioprospecting. Recent advances in cultivation, DNA sequencing technologies and -omics (metagenomics, metaproteomics etc) methods have greatly contributed to the rapid advancement of our understanding of microbial diversity, function and they interactions with environment. Furthermore, comparative genomic studies can provide overall information about actinobacterial speciation, evolution, metabolism and environment adaptation mechanisms. This research topic comprising reviews and original articles highlights the recent advances regarding the unexpectedly diverse/rare group of actinobacteria with special selective isolation methods or culture-independent methods, as well as their biological activities, ecophysiologica function and mechanisms from diverse special and extreme environments.

    Notes: Tunnel-regenerated multiple-active-region (TRMAR) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with high quantum efficiency and high brightness have been proposed and fabricated. We have proved experimentally that the efficiency of the electrical luminescence and the on-axis luminous intensity of such TRMAR LEDs scaled linearly approximately with the number of the active regions. The on-axis luminous intensity of such TRMAR LEDs with only 3 μm GaP current spreading layer have exceeded 5 cd at 20 mA dc operation under 15° package. The high-quantum-efficiency and high-brightness LEDs under the low injection level were realized. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Well-crystallized cerium(IV) oxide (CeO2) powders with nanosizes without agglomeration have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method in an acidic medium by using cerium hydroxide gel as a precursor. The relationship between the grain size, the morphology of the CeO2 crystallites, and the reaction conditions such as temperature, time, and acidity of the medium was studied. The experiments showed that with increasing reaction temperature and time, the CeO2 crystallites grew larger. The crystallites synthesized in an acidic hydrothermal medium were larger and had a more regular morphology than the ones synthesized in a neutral or alkaline medium when the reaction temperature and time were fixed. The CeO2 crystallites synthesized in an acidic medium were monodispersed; however, there was vigorous agglomeration among the grains synthesized in a neutral or alkaline medium. It was demonstrated that the hydrothermal treatment was an Ostwald ripening process and the acidity (pH) of the used hydrothermal medium played a key role in the dissolution of smaller grains. It is proposed that the dissolution process can control the kinetics of the growth of larger grains.

    Notes: Zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4) particles have been synthesized by the hydrothermal method using NH3·H2O as a pH adjustment mineralizer. Experimental results showed that ZnAl2O4 particle size was dependent on the precursor pH, and could be controlled through pH adjustment. It was 5.5, 11.5, and 27 nm when the precursor pH was 8.2, 9.3, and 10.5, respectively. On the other hand, the particle size distribution changed broader with increase in pH. These differences were attributable to the different NH3·H2O function. NH3·H2O was mainly used as a base at lower pH (〈9.0), while its complex function predominated at higher one (〉9.5). From thermodynamic viewpoint, the rate-limiting steps were dissolution of Al(OH)3 and γ-AlO(OH) to Al(OH)4− at lower and higher pH, respectively. The newly formed γ-AlO(OH) with high reactivity was the critical factor in the synthesis of bimodal particles. Higher temperature treatment of γ-AlO(OH) could decrease the reactivity, and could be used as an aluminum source for synthesis uniform ZnAl2O4 particles.

    Notes: Abstract The disjunct distributions of morphologically similar plants between eastern Asia and eastern North America have fascinated botanists and biogeographers since the Linnaean era. This biogeographic pattern is currently recognized by the disjunct distributions of some species, approximately 65 genera, and a few closely related genera in these two widely separated areas. Early workers treated many disjuncts as conspecific, but most were later recognized as intercontinental species pairs. Recent phylogenetic studies confirm affinities between many of the disjunct taxa but also indicate that the disjunct pairs of species are rarely each other's closest relatives. Instead, a pattern of further diversification of species on one or both continents is commonly found. Phylogenetic, molecular, geologic, and fossil data all support the hypothesis that the eastern Asian and eastern North American disjunct distributions are relicts of the maximum development of temperate forests in the northern hemisphere during the Tertiary. Fossil and geologic evidence supports multiple origins of this pattern in the Tertiary, with both the North Atlantic and the Bering land bridges involved. In many genera of flowering plants, current estimates of divergence times using molecular and fossil data suggest that the disjunct patterns were established during the Miocene. Morphological stasis, evidenced by the minimal morphological divergence of species after a long time of separation, must have occurred in some of the disjunct groups in the north temperate zone.

    Notes: The impact of inorganic ions on sucrose fluxes in the cotyledons and on the pathway of phloem loading was studied in Ricinus communis L. seedlings. The cotyledons were incubated in defined solutions which contained either potassium, sodium, magnesium or calcium as chloride salts, or the sodium salts of sulphate or phosphate. Sucrose uptake from the medium into the cotyledons was only slightly affected by the salts. Sucrose efflux to the medium was increased by phosphate and sulphate and to a lesser extent by sodium and potassium. Phloem loading from the apoplasm and the symplasm was analysed by addition of labelled sucrose to the medium, determination of the specific radioactivity of sucrose in sieve-tube exudate and quantification of export into the seedling axis. Potassium and sodium stimulated the apoplasmic route of phloem loading of sucrose, mostly at the expense of loading from cotyledon sucrose pools. In contrast, sulphate and phosphate strongly inhibited the apoplasmic route whereas the (small) symplasmic flux from the cotyledon sucrose pools was less affected. Magnesium ions inhibited phloem loading by both pathways. The potential of ions in modulating the pathways of sucrose export in day to day operation of plants is discussed.

    Notes: A Biolog™ (sole carbon source utilisation) user database of tropical and temperature rhizobial strains was created and used in conjunction with the partial 16S rRNA sequencing method to characterise 12 rhizobial isolates from African acacias and other tropical woody legumes. There was close agreement between the two methods but also some significant discrepancies. A high degree of diversity was shown in the relatively small sample of isolates, with 4 out of 5 of the currently proposed rhizobial genera represented. This is the first time Biolog has shown congruence with genotypic fingerprinting using a wide selection of rhizobial reference and test strains.
