We report on a new miniature, high-resolution, susceptibility thermometer that employs LaxGd1−xCl3 as the paramagnetic material for temperature measurement below 4 K. The thermometer utilizes small permanent disk magnets to provide the required magnetic field, and has a total mass of only 2 g. The thermometer shows a resolution of 0.2 nK in a 1 Hz bandwidth and an absolute drift rate less than 50 fK/s at 2.2 K. In this article, we describe the thermometer design, assembly procedure, and experimental test results, including its thermal time constant and susceptibility to external magnetic fields. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
