Description / Table of Contents: Summary The exact similarity solution of the problem of the unsteady flow of a hypothetic power-law liquid near a suddenly started plate (Rayleigh's problem) is employed for the construction of an approximative solution of the same problem for arbitrary purely viscous non-Newtonian liquids. The testing of accuracy of this approximative “pseudosimilarity” solution is based on calculation of residua in the macroscopic balances of momentum and mechanical energy. Numerical results are reported for the Powell-Eyring model of the viscosity function.

Notes: Abstract Voltage-step transient experiments are used to calibrate electrodiffusion (ED) friction probes. The approach is demonstrated on the probes in high-speed rotating impellers. This calibration has shown that shear rates as high as 106s-1 can be measured reliably using 0.5mm Pt working electrodes in ferro/ferricyanide aqueous solutions. The complete transient calibration experiment provides sufficient information about the dynamics of ED friction probes.

Notes: Abstract The ohmic potential drop between the working and reference electrodes plays an important role in the early stage of the voltage-step transient process. The non-linear effect of the ohmic drop on the transient currents is calculated for large voltage steps, assuming reversible behaviour (negligible surface overpotential) of the redox couple O+ne=R.

Notes: Abstract Three-segment electrodiffusion probes embedded in a wall allow to determine simultaneously the three kinematic parameters of flow close to the probe surface: the flow directionθ, the wall shear rateq, and the normal velocity coefficientA,v z = −A z 2. A well-controlled three-dimensional flow, generated by a rotating disk, was used to demonstrate the capabilities of this new kind of electrodiffusion probes by comparing experimental results with the prediction based on the well-known hydrodynamical theory.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary An analytical solution of the so-called Rayleigh (plate start-up) problem is given for a certain totally automorphous model of viscoelasticity. The solution exhibits some phenomena which are typical for non-linear viscoelastic materials. The shock wave, with an abrupt change in shear rate, travels with finite velocity, what is typical for elastic bodies. The primary stress impuls propagates with an infinite velocity, which — in contrast —is typical for viscous fluids.

Notes: Conclusion The method proposed is suitable for cases when we do not have available a rheometer enabling to obtain sufficiently accurate rheograms for lower values of rates of shear, so long as the parameters of the rheological model chosen are sufficient for expressing the rheogram. The method has been verified for the power law model by measurements for one liquid (one per cent aqueous solution of carboxymethylcellulose); the measurements were carried out withUbbelohdes modification of the rheometer proposed and also with the rotational rheometer “Rheotest”. The application of theV-t nomogram is illustrated in fig. 2. Results obtained by using theV-t nomogram and by computation from the relation [19] $$Q = \frac{{dV}}{{dt}}$$ [19] are in $$\mathfrak{F}, \mathfrak{B}$$ coordinates compared in fig. 3 with those obtained with the “Rheotest” instrument. Over the range of rates of shear from 20 to 60 sec−1 the agreement in the results was better than 2% relative; this is less than the dispersion of the results of each method.

Notes: Summary An analysis of mathematical model describing the steady-state, laminar, isothermal, axial flow in ducts of annular cross-section is presented which permits a solution to be formulated which holds for any model of incompressible purely-viscous fluid (generalized Newtonian fluid).
