Description: The Bayankhoshuu Ruins section in southern Mongolia is characterized by strongly thrusted and folded sequences. Overall, three sections ranging from Ordovician to Carboniferous rocks were studied. Facies analysis combined with stratigraphic data provide improved lithostratigraphic descriptions of Palaeozoic successions in the Mushgai region. The overall marine sedimentary sequence is punctuated by volcanic rocks–basaltic lava of Silurian and Middle Devonian age and volcaniclastic bentonite and tuff in the Middle to Late Devonian and Mississippian suggesting an island arc setting. The Minjin Member of the Botuulkhudag Formation (Middle Devonian to Late Devonian) is primarily composed of thick basaltic and subaerial volcanic rocks with minor silicified siltstone and chert inclusions. Thicker successions of limestone occur in the Ordovician/Silurian, Early Devonian, and the Mississippian. The macrofauna is scarce, except distinct limestone horizons where different fossil groups were recognized. Microfossils, such as radiolarians and conodonts, are scarce and generally poorly preserved. However, based on the re-study of collections from earlier publications and new conodont data, a more detailed biostratigraphic record of the Khoyormod, Botuulkhudag, and Arynshand formations of the Bayankhoshuu Ruins section can be developed. For instance, the Arynshand Formation likely ranges from the late Bispathodus ultimus conodont biozone to the Scaliognathus anchoralis–Doliognathus latus conodont biozone. A tectonic breccia occurs in the early Mississippian and is overlain by a red shale of remarkable thickness at the top of this formation which points to subaerial exposure in the early Mississippian (near the Tournaisian/Visean transition). Due to strong tectonic overprint and/or facies, some unconformities/hiatuses occur. Most strata are intensively folded and faulted, ranging from centimeter to meter scale. Overall, deposition likely occurred on either the Mandalovoo or Gurvansayhan Terrane.

Description: A Late Devonian to (?)Early Mississippian section at Hushoot Shiveetiin gol in the Baruunhuurai Terrane of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) exposes large parts of cyclic Famennian shallow-water siliciclastic shelf deposits composed of siltstones, sandstones, shales, volcaniclastics, and intercalated autochthonous carbonates. The youngest part of the section, possibly Early Mississippian, is represented by arkosic sandstones with large plant remains. The facies reflects a range from shallow-intertidal to outer ramp settings. In terms of conodont stratigraphy, the Hushoot Shiveetiin gol section ranges from the Palmatolepis minuta minuta Biozone to at least the Palmatolepis rugosa trachytera Biozone. Hiatuses of several conodont biozones occur due to the facies setting (erosion and reworked sediments which are recognized by reworked conodonts) rather than thrusting or folding. The environmental setting was characterized by coeval subaerial volcanism resulting in numerous pyroclastic deposits. The depositional environments and intense volcanic activity at the Hushoot Shiveetiin gol section limited the stratigraphic distribution, abundance, and diversity of many elements of the fauna such as brachiopods. Ostracods were very abundant and diverse through many parts of the section. Although limited in stratigraphic distribution, the crinoid fauna is the most diverse Palaeozoic fauna collected from Mongolia to date and supports the hypothesis that the CAOB was a biodiversity hotspot in the aftermath of the Frasnian–Famennian extinction event.

Notes: Abstract It can be predicted that, provided the interfacial energies are well chosen for two individual particles, then it is possible to engulf one particle into the other. This has now been achieved experimentally using poly-[butylmethacrylate] particles as the host material and poly-[styrene] particles for engulfment. Initially, anionic poly-[styrene] particles were heterocoagulated onto electrosterically stabilised cationic particles of poly-[butylmethacrylate]. Then on heating the heterocoagulated units above the glass transition temperature of the latter engulfment occurred.

Notes: Abstract  By means of heterocoagulation anionic poly-[styrene] particles were coated with smaller electrosterically stabilised cationic particles of poly-[butyl methacrylate]. On heating the heterocoagulated units 45 °C above the glass transition temperature of poly-[butyl methacrylate], as predicted theoretically, the latter polymer spread over the surface of the poly-[styrene] particle to give a composite particle with a core-shell structure. It was found that the extent of packing of the small particles on the larger core particle was a critical feature of the coating process.

Notes: Soluble ethylene polymerization catalysts derived from (π-C5H5)2Ti(R)Cl and R′AlCl2 where R is ethyl or higher alkyl and R′ may be methyl or ethyl, were studied both by polymerization kinetics at 0°C and by diagnostic experiments. An early acceleration in rate occurred at this temperature in toluene solvent which was due to a solvent dependent increase in catalyst activity, not to a gradual formation of catalyst. No such solvent effect was found in nonaromatic solvents. The subsequent decay in rate, at least at low temperatures, did not depend upon valence reduction. The effect of Al/Ti ratio was studied, and certain discrepancies in the literature were shown to be due to the method of making kinetic measurements. Oxygen, which has previously been reported to affect the polymerization rate with these catalysts, was also found to eliminate the acceleration period in toluene when present in the amount of 1% of the catalyst. These catalysts gave polymers at low temperature for which the active site had long life and which did not undergo chain transfer. Therefore, they approximate many of the characteristics of living polymers.

It was found that the first insertion of ethylene into the Ti—R bond is difficult when R = methyl or phenyl, and for this reason these catalysts show a different overall behavior than when R = ethyl or higher alkyl.

Description: The Late Devonian, Famennian, Hongguleleng Formation of northwestern China has yielded one of the most diverse echinoderm faunas known from China. New collections and re-evaluation of earlier collections results in recognition of new taxa, increases the known diversity, provides new morphological information on some of the previously reported taxa, and provides new information on the affinity of the Late Devonian echinoderms of the Hongguleleng Formation. New crinoid taxa introduced are Gnarycrinus lanei n. gen., n. sp., Anamesocrinus tieni n. sp., Histocrinus? chenae n. sp., Eumhacrinus tribrachiatus n. gen., n. sp., Sostronocrinus aberratus n. sp. and Labrocrinus granulatus n. gen., n. sp. One new species of blastoid, Hadroblastus liaoi, n. sp. is described. Previous reports listed 46 echinoderms from the Hongguleleng Formation, including 13 blastoids and 33 crinoids. An additional 11 crinoid species bring the total crinoids to 44 species assigned to 32 genera. Similarly, the one additional species of blastoid brings the totals to 14 species assigned to 12 genera. The new echinoderms described herein include the first report of a dimerocrinitid, amphoracrinid, allagacrinid, glossocrinid, histocrinid, cercidiocrinid, dactylocrinid and neoschismatid from the Devonian of northwestern China. Additional morphologic information is provided for three of the previously described taxa and a revision of species assigned to Grabauicrinus is proposed. The crinoids and blastoids suggest closer affinity with Mississippian faunas than with Devonian faunas, and with North American faunas than European faunas. Collectively the blastoid and crinoid faunas from the Hongguleleng indicate that rediversification happened rapidly after extinction in contrast to current suggestions of a long interval of lowered origination following these extinction events.

Description: Critical to understanding long-term trends in diversity is a dataset that is both worldwide in scope and based on a sound taxonomic foundation. In this paper we re-evaluate the Famennian (Late Devonian) echinoderm dataset, which has changed radically in the past decade, and reinterpret patterns of Late Devonian echinoderm extinction and rebound based on these new data. Historically, Famennian (Late Devonian) and earliest Carboniferous echinoderms have been poorly known on a global basis leading to interpretations of prolonged rebound from the Devonian extinction events. Recent discoveries of abundant and diverse Famennian echinoderm faunas from northwestern China, Colorado, Australia and Iran, together with re-examination of previously known echinoderm faunas from Germany and England, have altered drastically our understanding of the patterns of extinction and rebound of Famennian and earliest Carboniferous echinoderm communities. Overall, Famennian echinoderm diversity at the generic level is nearly five times greater than reported in the 2002 Sepkoski compilation, and familial level diversity is more than seven times greater than previously thought. Despite the increases in diversity, Famennian echinoderm faunas show a reduced diversity of camerate crinoids that typify both Middle Devonian and Lower Mississippian faunas and portend the rise of cladid crinoid diversity later in the Carboniferous. Individual Famennian faunas are numerically dominated by blastoids, which also portends trends seen at various times later in the Palaeozoic. In general, we are able to recognize the following trends. Rebound from the Late Devonian extinction events in echinoderms was more rapid than previously thought, but seems to be concentrated in Asia. Palaeogeographically Famennian echinoderms can be grouped into two broad regions: one includes China, Australia and Iran, all of which bordered the Palaeotethys; the other includes regions from Laurussia (Europe and North America) and northern Africa (Morocco).
