Notes: A versatile Czochralski crystal pulling system with automatic diameter control for the growth of nonlinear optical oxide crystals is discussed. Pure and doped bulk single crystals of bismuth silicon oxide (Bi12SiO20) have been successfully grown using this system. The system consists of a regular Czochralski type pulling system with provision for continuous weighing of the growing crystal to provide feedback for power control. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The optical and nonlinear optical properties of 2-(N-prolinol)-5-nitropyridine (PNP) have been investigated. The refractive indices show strong dispersion and high birefringence in the spectral range from 488 to 1064 nm. At 632 nm the main refractive indices are nx=1.990, ny=1.788, and nz=1.467. The two major nonlinear optical susceptibilities were determined (dyxx=48 pm/V, dyyy=17 pm/V). Angle-tuned phase-matched second-harmonic generation was demonstrated at 1064 nm. Type I noncritical phase matching using the nonlinear optical susceptibility dyxx is predicted for a fundamental wavelength λ=1020 nm.

Notes: Comparative analysis was carried out for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation in response to powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis[Erysiphe graminis] f.sp. tritici) primary germ tube (PGT) and appressorial germ tube (AGT) contact, and in papilla (cell wall apposition) and hypersensitive responses (HR) in wheat (Triticum aestivum). Using primary leaves of three susceptible wheat lines (Bainong 3217; Beijing 837; Jingshuang 16) and five resistant lines [Mardler (Pm2 + Pm6); Ulka/8 × Cc (Pm2); Mardler/7 × Bainong 3217 (Pm2); Pm16; Pm16/7 × Beijing 837 (Pm16)], early H2O2 accumulation between 10 and 48 h after inoculation was studied. Strong H2O2 accumulation was found in effective papillae and associated cytosolic vesicles in both susceptible and resistant wheat lines, suggesting the important role of H2O2 in effective papillae formed as a general plant defence against powdery mildew. High frequency of effective papilla formation was observed in all five resistant lines. Among resistant lines, hypersensitive cell death was detected earlier in Mardler and Ulka/8 × Cc than in Pm16 and Pm16/7 × Beijing 837. In all cases this was associated with H2O2 accumulation in attacked epidermal cells. Interestingly, penetration resistance but not HR appeared to be mediated by the Pm2 gene in the Mardler/7 × Bainong 3217 line, suggesting that Pm2 may govern an HR-independent defence pathway in this genetic background. As effective papillae and HR did not occur in the same cells, papilla deposition may be independent of the HR response, despite the fact that both defence mechanisms were associated with high H2O2 accumulation. In wheat powdery mildew-incompatible interactions, HR acts as a second line of defence to contain infection when the papilla defence fails.

Notes: A versatile low-cost Czochralski system for pulling crystals from melt has been described. It is designed for low melting, transparent, and nonlinear optical materials. One of the most important novel feature of this crystal growth system is that the entire growth process including the solid–liquid interface can be viewed from any direction. Another is the use of an after-heater to reduce excess heat loss from the surface of the melt.

Notes: Hot water precooked chicken parts were consistently lower in bacterial count than the microwave energy cooked samples. The surviving bacteria on the hot water cooked samples belonged to either the genus Micrococcus or the genus Staphylococcus. All colonies were nonpigmented. However, in addition to those bacteria found on the water cooked samples, pigmented staphylococcus and occasionally Gram positive rods were present on the microwave energy cooked samples. Precooking chicken parts in hot 3% polyphosphates solution resulted in an almost sterile product. Polyphosphates were more effective in controlling the growth of micrococcus and staphylococcus, which were the principle microbial flora found on the surface of fresh dressed chicken.

Notes: Abstract The charge-temperature technique was used to investigate the oxide properties of silicon MOS capacitors fabricated on a wafer with an oxide thickness of 660 Å. The stretchout of high frequencyC — V curve of the capacitor after a positive charge-temperature aging was proved to be due to the lateral nonuniformities of mobile charges and the increase of interface traps. The effect of lateral nonuniformitites was found to be successfully described by a model consisting of two parallelly connected nonuniform capacitors. The only parameter of importance is their area ratio, which can be easily determined by theoretical fitting. The appearance of a negative equivalent interface trap density was proposed as a new method to directly identify the existence of lateral nonuniformities.

Notes: Summary Two types of polysaccharides were separated from the extracellular polysaccharide produced by Anabaena flos-aquae A-37 by ion exchange chromatography. The neutral polysaccharide is composed of mainly glucose with minor amounts of xylose in a molar ratio of 8:1. Glucose is believed to constitute the polysaccharide core to which xylose is attached. The acidic polysaccharide is composed of glucose and uronic acid as the major monomers with equal amounts of xylose and ribose as the minor constituents. The molar ratio of the monomers found in the acidic polymer is 6:1:1:10 as glucose: xylose: ribose: uronic acid. Chemical analyses showed that the extracellular polysaccharide consists of more neutral polymer (62%) than the acidic polymer (38%).
