Description: The potential effects of elevated CO2 level and reduced carbonate saturation state in marine environment on fishes and other non-calcified organisms are still poorly known. In present study, we investigated the effects of ocean acidification on embryogenesis and organogenesis of newly hatched larvae of marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) after 21 d exposure of eggs to different artificially acidified seawater (pH 7.6 and 7.2, respectively), and compared with those in control group (pH 8.2). Results showed that CO2-driven seawater acidification (pH 7.6 and 7.2) had no detectable effect on hatching time, hatching rate, and heart rate of embryos. However, the deformity rate of larvae in pH 7.2 treatment was significantly higher than that in control treatment. The left and right sagitta areas did not differ significantly from each other in each treatment. However, the mean sagitta area of larvae in pH 7.6 treatment was significantly smaller than that in the control (p = 0.024). These results suggest that although marine medaka might be more tolerant of elevated CO2 than some other fishes, the effect of elevated CO2 level on the calcification of otolith is likely to be the most susceptibly physiological process of pH regulation in early life stage of marine medaka.

Notes: The magnetic properties of R2Co14B1−xCx (x=0, 0.5 and R=Y, Sm) compounds have been studied by measuring the temperature dependence of the easy- and hard-magnetization curves on magnetically aligned samples between 1.5 and 300 K for Y2Co14(B,C) and at 4.2 K for Sm2Co14(B,C). The magnetic anisotropy of Y2Co14B increases due to the substitution of C for B, whereas the saturation magnetization decreases. Between 1.5 and 300 K, the anisotropy field of Y2Co14B0.5C0.5 increases about 2 T and the Co moment decreases about 0.05μB. The anisotropy field of Sm2Co14B also increases upon C substitution and the saturation magnetization decreases slightly. The ac susceptibilities of both Sm2Co14B and Sm2Co14B0.5C0.5 exhibit anomalies that may arise from a spin reorientation within the basal plane.

Notes: An Er-doped LaP5O14 ferroelastic crystal has been studied by synchrotron radiation white beam x-ray topography. A set of normal ferroelastic domains is revealed in topographs by the intense contrast at the domain walls and the temperature dependence of the wall contrast is shown to be in good agreement with that expected from the structural consideration. In addition to growth bands and growth sector boundaries, a type of abnormal boundary is observed, and the contrast varies with the occurrence of phase transitions. A detailed discussion on experimental results is given in terms of structural and symmetry analyses.

Notes: The magnetic properties of (Y,Nd)Co4B, Y(Co,Fe)4B, and YCo4(B,C) compounds have been investigated. The spin-reorientation temperature of YCo4B increases with substitution of Nd for Y and Fe for Co, but decreases with the replacement of B for C. The Curie temperature of YCo4B decreases upon substitution of Nd for Y and C for B, whereas it increases upon the introduction of Fe. The magnetic phase diagrams are given for (Y,Nd)Co4B, Y(Co,Fe)4B, and YCo4(B,C). The results show that the temperature range of the easy-axis anisotropy in YCo4B is increased by C substitution, and decreased by Nd and Fe substitution. The saturation magnetization of YCo4B increases by the introduction of Nd and Fe. Substitution of C for B changes the magnetic moment of Co only slightly. The magnetic anisotropy is increased by substitution of C for B.

Notes: An investigation of twin structures in NdP5O14 single crystals has been undertaken using white-beam synchrotron x-ray topography. The so-called a-type twins along the a axis are clearly revealed in the topographs. The displacements of the images that arise from the twins are directly measured in different topographs. With the measured values, the monoclinic distortion angle δ(δ=β−90°) is calculated, which is in good agreement with the unit cell parameters. A fine-beam Laue diffraction pattern of the twin has also been taken which is well consistent with its simulation. From these results, the twin structures of NdP5O14 are discussed.

Notes: It is known that the addition of alloying elements to the Nd2Fe14B-based alloys significantly inhibits the onset of the crystallization in particles produced by the inert gas atomization (IGA) process. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was performed on a selection of as-atomized particles synthesized by IGA methods with the addition of 3 wt % TiC. TEM samples were successfully prepared using the wedge technique. Large particles (〉10 μm) tend to consist of well-defined grains of Nd2Fe14B while the submicron size particles are generally amorphous and particles with diameter d in the size range, 1 μm〈d〈10 μm, contain nanocrystallites dispersed evenly throughout the amorphous matrix. The selected area electron diffraction pattern of the nanocrystallites in powder particles with diameters below 10 μm generally show three or more diffused diffraction rings that are indicative of α-Fe, with a particulate size of several tens of angstroms. These observations demonstrate that while the alloying addition of Ti and C in the IGA process significantly suppresses the formation of properitectic α-Fe in the Nd2Fe14B alloy, they do not completely prevent it. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Transparent single-phase rubidium titanyl phosphate (RTP) films having excellent crystalline properties have been deposited by excimer laser ablation method on (001)- and (010)-oriented potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) substrates, respectively. X-ray θ-2θ scans and pole figures showed that the laser-ablated RTP films grew epitaxially on, and had exactly the same orientations of, the underlying KTP substrates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the RTP films prepared with this method are nearly stoichiometric. It appears to be possible to use these films as waveguides having sharp waveguide/substrate interfaces. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The stray flux manifestations of surface magnetic domains found in as-grown Nd2Fe14B single crystals were observed, with a resolution in the range of 1 μm, using conventional scanning electron microscopy (SEM) without instrumental modifications. A modified image-distortion mode was applied to image the three-dimensional stray flux emanating from the sample. The simplicity of the technique and the ready adaptability of the SEM to such modifications as in situ current and magnetic field application suggest that the results of this study may be extended to investigations of other materials of technological interest, such as perpendicular media disks. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: To elucidate the interphase interactions inherent to nanocomposite magnetic alloys, measurements of remanence Br, and coercivity Hci were made on a series of four meltspun, remanence-enhanced nanocomposite alloys consisting solely of various amounts of Nd2Fe14B and α-Fe. The phase constitution and microstructural scale of the alloys were characterized with synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Magnetic measurements were made using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry on evacuated and encapsulated samples in the temperature range of 300 K≤T≤750 K, in order to characterize the α-Fe component independently of the Nd2Fe14B component. The high-temperature coercivities of the samples increase with the amount of α-Fe present in the samples, ranging from an average value of approximately 75 Oe for the sample with 14 wt % excess Fe to over 400 Oe at 700 K for the sample with 27 wt % excess Fe. The relatively high coercivities of the samples found at elevated temperatures imply that a tabular morphology of the α-Fe grains is conferring anisotropy to the phase; this conclusion is supported by transmission electron microscopy. It is concluded that while the significant coercivity of the α-Fe phase likely reduces the room-temperature remanence enhancement of the alloy below its theoretical ideal, the favorable interphase interface orientation promotes exchange coupling. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
