Abstract A simple method is introduced to obtain continuous analogue signals representing the number of breaths or heart beats in a certain moving time window. The use of a time window, the duration of which can be chosen at will, stands in contrast to a chosen number of beat-to-beat intervals as is found in existing equipment. The differences are extensively investigated between these signals and the pneumotachogram or cardiotachogram, respectively. The advantage of the new method is the agreement between the numerical value of the produced signal and the traditional measure used by clinicians.
