Notes: [Auszug] A formidable many-body problem in ecology is to understand the complex of factors controlling patterns of relative species abundance (RSA) in communities of interacting species. Unlike many problems in physics, the nature of the interactions in ecological communities is not completely known. ...

Notes: [Auszug] The unified neutral theory of biodiversity and biogeography provides a dynamic null hypothesis for the assembly of natural communities. It is also useful for understanding the influence of speciation, extinction, dispersal and ecological drift on patterns of relative species abundance, ...

Notes: [Auszug] The recurrent patterns in the commonness and rarity of species in ecological communities—the relative species abundance—have puzzled ecologists for more than half a century. Here we show that the framework of the current neutral theory in ecology can easily be generalized to ...

Notes: [Auszug] The theory of island biogeography asserts that an island or a local community approaches an equilibrium species richness as a result of the interplay between the immigration of species from the much larger metacommunity source area and local extinction of species on the island (local ...

Notes: [Auszug] We have demonstrated that information on relative species abundance (RSA) cannot, without additional information, be used to discriminate among biological explanations for different RSA patterns; but Chave et al. claim that our conclusion is premature. Here we show that their analysis ...

Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Transactions, vol. 334. Moscow, Nauka Publ. (V.N. Kholodov, Ed.), 263 pp
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: The book is devoted to comprehensive study of composition of sediments from the North Pacific Ocean. The sediments have been divided characterized by their lithologic and facial types, grain size composition and mineralogy. Influence of volcanism on formation of mineral and chemical composition of these sediments has been shown. Regularities of distribution of sediment accumulation rates and of a number of chemical elements on the Transpacific profile have been found. Determining role of mechanical fractionation in their localization has been shown.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: The book summarizes results of long-term studies of sulfur geochemistry in bottom sediments of seas and oceans. Processes of hydrogen sulfide formation in bacterial reduction of sulfates, its transformation into transient and stable compounds of reduced sulfur in liquid and solid phases of sediments are under consideration. Regularities of distribution of sulfate and reduced sulfur in ocean sediments are shown. Problems of sulfur budget in the modern oceans are discussed.

In: Volkov, I.I. (Ed.), Biogeochemistry of Diagenesis of Ocean Sediments; Nauka Publ. (Moscow): in Russian, 136-170
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: The book is devoted to study of diagenetic changes of organic matter and mineral part of sediments and interstitial waters of the Pacific Ocean due to physical-chemical and microbiological processes. Microbiological studies deal with different groups of bacteria. Regularities of quantitative distribution and the role of microorganisms in geochemical processes are under consideration. Geochemical studies highlight redox processes of the early stages of sediment diagenesis, alterations of interstitial waters, regularities of variations in chemical composition of iron-manganese nodules.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Results of mineralogical and isotopic analyzes of sulfur and carbon in carbonate nodules and host bottom sediments and results of 14C measurement in carbonate nodules are reported. It is proved that the carbonate nodules formed 11-22 thousand years ago in anaerobic diagenesis of bottom sediments rich in organic matter. Isotopic light metabolic carbon dioxide was a source of carbonate for nodules. It formed during microbial degradation of organic matter of bottom sediments.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Sulfur speciation in bottom sediments from the area of the Peru upwelling has been studied. Data on sulfur contents in different compounds (sulfide, elemental, sulfate, pyritic and organic), water content, Eh, and organic carbon content in the bottom sediments have been obtained. The bottom sediments from the area are characterized by high content of organic carbon and low contents of total and reactive iron; this is typical for bottom sediments from ocean upwelling areas. Intense process of sulfate reduction occurs in the bottom sediments of the area, and accumulation of reduced sulfur compounds derivated from bacterial hydrogen sulfide does not exceed previously known values for other regions of the ocean.
