    Notes: Abstract Some aspects of the perturbative influence of radiation reflected by the Earth's surface on the motion of an artificial satellite are discussed. We concentrate on consequences of the extreme models with anisotropic reflection on the Earth's surface (specular reflection, clouds with anisotropic phase function). The possible effects of Lála's modification of the Earth's albedo nominal value are investigated. The role of the satellite surface optical properties is pointed out in the context of the albedo effect. All mentioned models are purely numerical. The whole message of the paper can be summarized in the following items -It is very doubtful that the 10−8 ÷ 10−9 m s−2 level is reached when determining the perturbing accelerations caused by the albedo effect in the case of the ERS-1 satellite due to poorly defined optical characteristics of the Earth's atmosphere, the Earth and the satellite's surface. -In the general case this albedo effect uncertainty level is about 50% with respect to the averaged values, and probably as high as 100% with respect to the instantaneous values of the perturbing accelerations.

    Notes: Abstract The force due to radiation pressure on a satellite of arbitrary shape is written in a general form within a formalism similar to that used in the theory of radiative transfer in atmospheres. Then the corresponding integrals are evaluated for the simple case of a spherically symmetric satellite, and applied to model the perturbation due to the Earth-reflected radiation flux on LAGEOS. For this purpose, the optical behaviour of the Earth's surface and atmosphere is described as a combination of Lambertian diffusion (continents), partial specular reflection consistent with Fresnel law (oceans) and anisotropic diffusion according to Chandrasekhar's radiative transfer theory (clouds). The in-plane Gauss componentsT andS vs. mean anomaly are computed for a simple orbital geometry and for different models of the Earth's optical properties. A sensitive dependence is found on the assumed cloud distribution, with significant perturbations possibly arising from oceanic specular reflection when the satellite is close to the Earth's shadow boundaries.

    Notes: Abstract The orbital effects of the Lorentz force on the motion of an electrically charged artificial satellite moving in the Earth's magnetic field are determined. The geomagnetic field is considered as a multipole potential field and the satellite electrical charge is supposed to be constant. The relativistic perturbations of the main geomagnetic field are discussed briefly. The results are concentrated on the determination of the secular changes, and numerical values are computed for the case of the LAGEOS satellite. The results are discussed in the context of a possible detection of the Lense-Thirring effect analyzing the orbital perturbations of the LAGEOS and LAGEOS X satellites.

    Notes: Abstract We discuss some details of the cloud coverage aspects of the albedo effect — the pressure of the radiation reflected by the Earth — on the motion of an artificial satellite. We focus on modeling of the Earth's surface reflection and propagation of the radiation through the atmosphere. We adopt analytical models of these phenomena from radiative transfer theory, in contrast to earlier approaches, based on the fitting of satellite photometry data. We perform several computations based on the accepted models for the ERS-1 and MACEK satellites to test the hierarchy of importance of the effects investigated. In the case of the MACEK mission (which carried a precision accelerometer on board) this information might be essential when interpreting the data.

    Description: Throughout the history of the Solar System, Earth has been bombarded by interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), which are asteroid and comet fragments of diameter 1-1,000 µm. The IDP flux is believed to be in quasi-steady state: particles created by episodic main belt collisions or cometary fragmentation replace those removed by comminution, dynamical ejection, and planetary or solar impact. Because IDPs are rich in 3He, seafloor sediment 3He concentrations provide a unique means of probing the major events that have affected the IDP flux and its source bodies over geological timescales (Farley et al., 1998, doi:10.1126/science.280.5367.1250; Takayanagi and Ozima, 1987, doi:10.1029/JB092iB12p12531; Farley, 1995, doi:10.1038/376153a0; Kortenkamp and Dermott, 1998, doi:10.1126/science.280.5365.874). Here we report that collisional disruption of the 〉150-km-diameter asteroid that created the Veritas family 8.3 +/- 0.5 Myr ago (Nesvorny et al., 2003, doi:10.1086/374807) also produced a transient increase in the flux of interplanetary dust-derived 3He. The increase began at 8.2 +/- 0.1 Myr ago, reached a maximum of 4 times pre-event levels, and dissipated over 1.5 Myr. The terrestrial IDP accretion rate was overwhelmingly dominated by Veritas family fragments during the late Miocene. No other event of this magnitude over the past 10**8 yr has been deduced from main belt asteroid orbits. One remarkably similar event is present in the 3He record 35 Myr ago, but its origin by comet shower (Farley et al., 1998, doi:10.1126/science.280.5367.1250) or asteroid collision (Tagle and Claeys, 2004, doi:10.1126/science.1098481) remains uncertain.
