Notes: Abstract. In this paper we present a complete detection scheme for ultrasonic crack detection in wet ceramics by means of ultrasonic nondestructive techniques. The detection scheme is based on a previous statistical characterization of the ultrasonic grain noise. In these previous works we obtained that the ultrasonic grain noise can be modeled as a K -noise [1, 2]. From this characterization we will prove that the expression of the probability of false alarm (PFA) obtained for a detector of Gaussian envelope pulses over K -noise using the Wigner-Ville Transform (WVT) proposed in reference [3] is valid for the real problem of ultrasonic microcrack detection in wet ceramics.

Notes: Summary The relative proportion and amount of proteins in five defined molecular weight (MW) regions (A1=above 71,000=71K, A2=71K−49K, A3=49K−31K, A4=31K−20K, A5=20K and less) were estimated by densitometric analyses of the amount of dye bound by kernel proteins (Fullington et al. 1980) of Triticum dicoccoides SDS-PAGE gels. These MW regions roughly correspond to the wheat protein solubility classes (Cole et al. 1981; Fullington et al. 1983). One purpose of the study was to select accessions whose seed proteins bind relatively high amounts of dye in the glutenin and albumin globulin regions. These accessions will be used for further in-depth studies as possible candidate donors of genes to improve the baking and nutritional quality of wheat. Marked differences in the quantitative relationships were found among the proteins in the five MW regions. Coefficients of variation (CV's) for the highest peak (i.e., most abundant protein) MW in different protein MW regions were similar for A1, A2 and A3, at 11.4, 11.7, and 11.1%, respectively, but only 4.1 for A4, and 10.6% for region A5. The CV for the highest peak MW overall was 29.8. Accession BP0649, for example, had over 44% of its protein in region A5, whereas BP0566 (lowest among the top 10%) had only 21.4% of its protein in that region. Over 37% of the proteins of accessions BP0649 and 0001 to 0005 was in region A5. At least 84 accessions with the highest amount of protein in region A5, and 13 accessions with more protein in region A1 than Chinese Spring may merit further evaluation as possible protein gene donors. High amounts of protein in A1 may be of importance in bread-baking quality, and in A4 and A5 for high lysine wheat. Accessions in both extremes were selected to test these hypotheses. All accessions are now or will be available in the USDA Wheat Collection.

Notes: Summary Triticum turgidum L. var. dicoccoides (wild emmer) is an important genetic resource for increasing the protein content of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Many studies have shown that the presence or absence of bands in sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide (SDS-PAGE) electrophoregrams of wheat storage proteins to be of a purely genetic character. A total protein extraction and SDS-PAGE technique was used to estimate the storage protein genetic variability among 841 accessions of wild emmer collected from various ecological regions in the Middle East. In addition, a computer data bank was developed, recording the onedimension electrophoregram bands for each accession by molecular weight (MW) and relative Coomassie Blue staining intensity as determined from densitometer scans. Analyses of this information are being used to identify specific accessions for further study by two dimension electrofocusing-electrophoresis and breeding and genetic analyses. The computer-assisted analyses indicated that the greatest genetic variability occurs for proteins in the high MW region (above 70,000 MW) followed by those in the medium range (70,000 to 33,300 MW). Comparatively little variability was revealed for protein subunits of below 33,300 MW.

Notes: Abstract Boldine, an aporphine alkaloid, was recently shown by us to exhibit potent antioxidant properties. We report here that boldine concentration-dependently inhibited the peroxidative (accumulation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) and lytic damage (trypan blue exclusion and lactate dehydrogenase leakage) to isolated rat hepatocytes induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBOOH). Boldine (200 μmol/L) fully cytoprotected and completely prevented the peroxidation induced by TBOOH a concentrations equal to or lower than 0.87 mmol/L. However, at a peroxide concentration of 0.91 mmol/L, although boldine completely inhibited lipid peroxidation it largely failed to afford cytoprotection against TBOOH. TBOOH alone (0.83 mmol/L) caused an early (within 60 s) sudden decline of reduced glutathione (by 50%) and an equivalent increase in the levels of oxidized glutathione. Neither of these effects was prevented by the simultaneous addition of a cytoprotective and antioxidant concentration of boldine (200 μmol/L). The delayed addition of boldine to the suspension (after 10 or 20 min), while effectively blocking any further increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, totally failed to prevent the peroxide-induced loss in cell viability. Conversely, preincubation of the hepatocytes with boldine for 150 min (at which time no boldine could be detected in either intra- or extracellular spaces) prevented lipid peroxidation and was as effective in protecting the cells against the damage caused by the subsequent addition of TBOOH as the simultaneous addition of boldine and TBOOH to hepatocytes preincubated for 150 min under control conditions.

Notes: Nimesulide, N-(4-nitro-2-phenoxyphenyl)methanesulfonamide is an antiinflamatory analgesic agent that is both reducible at the mercury electrode and oxidizable at the glassy carbon electrode. Nimesulide in hydroalcoholic solution, presents cathodic response in a wide range of pH (2-12), both, by differential pulse and tast polarography techniques. The obtained results show only one main well-defined peak or wave in all the pH range studied. This peak (or wave) corresponds to the nitro group reduction in position 4. The voltammetric oxidation shows one well-resolved signal in all the pH range studied. This anodic signal could be attributed to the methylsulfonamide group oxidation. For analytical purposes, a very well resolved diffusion controlled differential pulse polarographic peak obtained at pH 7 was selected. This peak was used to develop a new method for the determination of nimesulide in pharmaceutical dosage forms. The recovery study (104.8% with a RSD of 1.3%) shows that the method is sufficiently accurate and precise to be applied in the individual tablet assay of commercial samples.

Notes: A new differential pulse polarographic method is proposed for the determination of nicardipine, based on the electroactivity of the nitroaromatic group of the molecule. The proposed method is applied in the determination of the drug in pharmaceutical formulations and in photodegradation studies.

Notes: The anodic electrochemical behavior of the five members of the 1,4-dihydropyridine calcium antagonists family was studied. In all of the studied compounds (nifedipine, nitrendipine, nimodipine, nicardipine, and furaldipine), the oxidation process reveals only one anodic peak due to the twoelectron oxidation of the dihydropyridine ring to form the pyridine derivative compound. The differential pulse voltammetric technique was used for the quantitation of the 1,4-dihydropyridines in pharmaceutical forms. The voltammetric determination developed here represents a good analytical alternative, because sample preparation is easy (no excipient separation is necessary), is not time consuming, and is adequately accurate and precise. Furthermore, the developed method can be applied as an important tool in photodegradation studies.
