Abstract The Hubbard model is solved exactly on a cluster, which consists of a central site connected to Z neighboring sites. For Z→∞ this “Hubbard Star” can be viewed as the elementary structural element of the Hubbard model on a lattice in high dimensions, since in this case the Hubbard model is known to reduce to an effective single-site problem. It is found that in this limit a novel type of mean field description becomes exact. Both the groundstate energy and the full thermodynamics forT〉0 is derived.
