Chemical or microbial degradation of sulfonylureas in the soil. II. Metsulfuron methyl The rate of metsulfuron methyl degradation in a sandy loam soil was studied in relation to herbicide concentration, temperature and different soil treatments, i.e. sterilization and reinoculation by soil. This rate is not dependent on the initial concentration of herbicide; it is reduced by sterilization, and greatly increased by an increase in temperature. In soil and sterilized soil, 14C metsulfuron methyl gives different degradation products. These results demonstrate that chemical hydrolysis and microbial breakdown play a role in soil degradation, although attempts to extract degrading micro-organisms from the soil were unsuccessful.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mittels Thermoanalyse wurde ohne Probenaufbereitung die chemische Zusammensetzung von Hummerpanzern ermittelt.
Notes: Abstract The chemical composition of lobster shells was determined by thermal analysis without previous sample preparation. The humidity and ash content were directly calculated from the TG curve. A correlation between the percentage weight loss is a particular temperature interval and the concentration of chitin and protein in the starting material was found, and based on this new method is proposed for the quantitative determination of both polymers. The residual protein after the deproteinization could be estimated with 0.3% error.

Notes: Abstract The chemical composition and thermal behaviour of crab, shrimp and lobster shells were studied. The lobster cephalothorax and its main parts also constitute important sources of both polymers. Their chitin and protein content are 20 and 40 %, respectively (dry base) while in these cases the proteins are less associated to the matrix than in the carapace. The chitin level in the chitinous concentrates isolated from different sources is over 80 % in all cases but the polymer characteristics change in dependence on the raw material.

Notes: Abstract A chitin-lipoprotein complex was detected in the pre-exuvial lobster shell. The aqueous extract of this skeleton contains a lipoprotein in its highest molecular weight fraction where the phospholipids constitute the main component. Changes in the lipoprotein crystalline structure with temperature were detected, but not the formation of typical liquid crystals.

Notes: Abstract In this work, a simplified experimental calibration procedure of a tridilosa-type highway bridge finite element model is presented. Under static loading conditions, vertical deflections and longitudinal stress values of bridge midspan bar elements were used as reference parameters. Natural frequencies obtained through a finite element model are then compared with those obtained through experimental measurements. Good experimental-model correlation for the first two frequencies and corresponding mode shapes was obtained. Based on the results, improvements for future experimental instrumentation configurations and measurement for these types of bridges are presented and discussed.
