Notes: The dynamics of charged macro-particles in a complex "dusty" plasma is investigated for the conditions relevant for laboratory experiments on weakly ionized gas-discharge plasma and modeled by the Brownian dynamics method. The parameters responsible for order and scaling of the particle dynamics in the dissipative system of strongly interacting macro-particles are determined. The expression for the diffusion rate of macro-particles in strongly correlated liquid-type structures is derived and analyzed. The condensation of macro-particles (the growth of clusters) is numerically observed in the transition of the liquid-type Yukawa system to the qualitatively new dynamic state. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The dynamics of the formation of ordered structures of macroparticles charged by photoemission under the action of solar radiation under microgravitational conditions without the use of electrostatic traps to confine the particles is studied experimentally and theoretically. The working conditions needed for the formation of structures of charged macroparticles are chosen as a result of a numerical solution of the problem posed, the particle charges and the interparticle interaction parameter are determined, and the characteristic times specifying the dynamics of the formation of an ordered system of macroparticles are calculated. The behavior of an ensemble of macroparticles under the effect of solar radiation is observed experimentally on board the Mir space station. An analysis and comparison of the results of the experimental and theoretical investigations permit drawing a conclusion regarding the possibility of the existences of extended ordered formations of macroparticles charged by photoemission under microgravitational conditions.

Notes: Abstract An analysis is made of various self-oscillations which appear in plasma-dust systems with spatially varying macroparticle charges. The conditions of establishment and the nature of the evolution of the two main types of instability of these systems are analyzed. Particular attention is paid to cases of vortex particle motion. Dust systems having parameters similar to those in laboratory experiments are modeled numerically. Calculations were made for charged particles in an external electric field and in the Earth’s gravitational field using a molecular dynamics method.

Notes: Abstract The currents which charge a macroscopic particle placed in a plasma consist of discrete charges; hence, the charge can undergo random fluctuations about its equilibrium value. These random fluctuations can be described by a simple model which, if the mechanisms for charging of macroscopic particles are known, makes it possible to determine the dependence of the temporal and amplitude characteristics of the fluctuations on the plasma parameters. This model can be used to study the effect of charge fluctuations on the dynamics of the macroscopic particles. The case of so-called plasma-dust crystals (i.e., highly ordered structures which develop because of strong interactions among macroscopic particles) in laboratory gaseous discharge plasmas is considered as an example. The molecular dynamics method shows that, under certain conditions, random fluctuations in the charge can effectively heat a system of macroscopic particles, thereby impeding the ordering process.

Notes: Abstract The possibility of confining positively charged macroscopic dust particles in a unique photoemission trap was studied. The spatial distributions of the potentials for a cylindrical geometry of a phototrap were obtained (by the particles in a cell method) and the dynamics of the formation of ordered structures of dust particles in the potential field of the trap was studied (by the molecular-dynamics method). The dependence of the number of dust particles confined by a phototrap on the particle energies and sizes and the buffer-gas pressure were obtained.

Notes: Abstract Yukawa systems serve as models for plasmas and colloidal suspensions of charged particles. The state of these systems is determined by two dimensionless parameters: k = a/λ D , which is the ratio of the mean interparticle distance to the Debye length λ D , and Γ = Z d 2 e 2/aT d , which is the ratio of the Coulomb potential energy to the particle temperature T d (Z d is the charge of each particle). We propose an empirical scaling law for the critical coupling parameter Γ c needed for crystallization in Yukawa systems. The dependence of Γ c on k is in good agreement with recent molecular dynamics simulations.

Notes: Abstract The first observation of the diffraction of optical radiation on ordered structures of macroparticles in a low-temperature thermal plasma was reported. The experiments were conducted in an air thermal plasma at atmospheric pressure with CeO2 particles at temperatures 1800–2200 K. The parameters of the plasma medium were determined using probe and optical diagnostics methods. The binary correlation function of the system of macroparticles was reconstructed from measurements of the structure factor. Simulation of nonideal plasma with the parameters corresponding to experiment was performed by the molecular dynamic method. The computed and experimental correlation functions were compared, and it was noted that they are in good agreement with one another.

Notes: Abstract Levitation of dust particles in the anode region of a dc glow discharge was observed for the first time. A dust cloud of several tens of particles formed at a distance of several millimeters above the central part of the anode. When the discharge parameters were varied, the shape of the cloud and its position above the anode varied. An analysis of the experimental conditions revealed that these particles are positively charged in contrast to other experiments on the levitation of dust particles in a gas-discharge plasma. An estimate of the particle charge taking into account processes of electron emission from their surface is consistent with results of measurements of the electric field strength.

Notes: Abstract The possibility is studied of the formation of ordered dust-grain structures in a low-temperature thermal plasma consisting of electrons, ions, and micron-sized charged dust grains. The range of the required values of the coupling parameter Γ defining the degree to which the plasma is nonideal is calculated using the results of diagnostic measurements carried out in a plasma consisting of combustion products of propane in air with grains of different materials. The results obtained show that the most favorable conditions for the formation of strongly correlated grain structures (for both positively and negatively charged grains) take place at the maximum grain number density and a plasma temperature close to the minimum flame temperature (∼1600 K). In this case, the optimum grain radii lie in the range 4–10 µm and the maximum value of the parameter Γ is less than 200. Since the calculated values of Γ give an upper estimate, liquidlike ordered structures are most likely to form in a thermal plasma. Based on the results of the analysis, it is stated that an increase in the parameter Γ and, accordingly, the formation of plasma-crystal structures in a thermal plasma can only occur for positively charged grains.
