    Description: INTRODUCTION\nDistribution and ecology of hydroids from coral reefs of high islands and atolls of French Polynesia so far have received little attention. Redier (1967, 1971) published a preliminary list of 14 species from Salvat\'s collections, sampled during several trips to Tahiti, Tuamoto (Mururoa, Reao and Maturei Vavao Atolls), to the Australes Islands (Rapa) and to Gambier. \nThe present paper results from researches carried out by one of us (P.V.) concerning the benthic bionomy of reef sciophilous communities of hard bottoms. They have been carried out at Tiahura, Moorea, Society Islands (fig. IA) and on Takapoto Atoll, Tuamoto Archipelago (fig. 2A) in 1973 and 1974. They gave us occasion to compile a revised list of about 22 species of hydroids from French Polynesia.\nRegarding the general environmental conditions, the tides are of a semidiurnal type and the amplitude during spring tides does not exceed 40 to 50 cm. The water temperature varies between 2 5 o C, during the cold season, and 28o C, during the hot season. Moorea island is under the trade winds, blowing from a southwesterly direction and turning to the N . E . Accordingly the Tiahura region (fig. 1B), which is located at the N.W., is sheltered from the trade winds. Nevertheless, those winds induce a water circulation from W. to E. around the fringing reef and the barrier reef. Takapoto Atoll, to the contrary, is submitted to prevailing winds, blowing from N.E. to S.E. with a dominance in the eastern sector.

    Notes: In this work natural convection within a two-dimensional fluid saturated Darcy porous layer is considered. The porous material is in a large aspect ratio rectangle with its sides inclined with respect to the gravity vector. All four faces are exposed to uniform heat fluxes, opposite faces being heated and cooled, respectively. Analytical solutions for the streamfunction and temperature fields in the central region are deduced using a parallel flow assumption. Numerical confirmation of the analytical results is also obtained. For high enough Rayleigh numbers multiple steady states around the rest state are found. These states represent unsymmetrical flows in opposite directions. The critical Rayleigh number for the onset of motion determined from a stability analysis corresponds to that for the existence of unicellular convection using the parallel flow approximation. Linear stability limits of each of the multiple states are also calculated. One of the convective flows is found to be stable to higher Rayleigh numbers than the other.

    Notes: Natural convection with Soret effect in a binary fluid saturating a shallow horizontal porous layer is studied both numerically and analytically. The vertical walls of the enclosure are heated and cooled by uniform heat fluxes and a solutal gradient is imposed vertically. In the formulation of the problem, we use the Darcy model and the density variation is taken into account by the Boussinesq approximation. The governing parameters of the problem are the aspect ratio, A, the thermal Rayleigh number, RT, the buoyancy ratio, N, the Lewis number, Le and the Soret coefficient, NS. The analytical solution, based on the parallel flow approximation, is found to be in good agreement with a numerical solution of the full governing equations. In the presence of a vertical destabilizing concentration gradient, the existence of both natural and antinatural flows is demonstrated. When the vertical concentration gradient is stabilizing, multiple steady state solutions are possible in a range of buoyancy ratio, N, that depends strongly on the Soret coefficient, NS.

    Notes: Natural convection from a semi-infinite vertical plate embedded in a fluid saturated porous medium is studied both analytically and numerically. The plate is assumed to be heated isothermally or by a constant heat flux. The porous medium, modeled according to Darcy's law, is anisotropic in permeability with its principal axes oriented in a direction that is oblique to the gravity vector. In the large Rayleigh number limit, the governing boundary-layer equations are solved in closed form, using a similarity transformation. Comparisons between the numerical solution of the full equations and analytical solutions are presented for a wide range of the governing parameters. The effects of the anisotropic permeability ratio K*, of the orientation angle of the principal axes ?, and of the Rayleigh number RH on the flow and heat transfer are investigated. Results indicate that the anisotropic properties of the porous medium considerably modify the heat transfer, velocity and temperature profiles from that expected under isotropic conditions.

    Notes: The natural two-dimensional convection taking place between horizontal concentric cylinders filled with a satured anisotropic porous medium is studied numerically. The anisotropy concerns exclusively the permeability. Isothermal boundary conditions are applied on both inner and outer boundaries, with the outer boundary being warmer. The effects of the anisotropic permeability ratio K*, of the orientation angle of the principal axes defined by ?, and of the Rayleigh number Ra* on the flow and heat transfer are investigated. Results indicate that a net circulating flow around the annulus is generated, except for values of ? that preserve the symmetry of flow conditions with respect to the vertical diameter. It is also shown that the anisotropic part of the resistivity tensor is equivalent to a magnetic resistivity tensor.
