Notes:
An experimental verification of the theory of elemental phase analysis proposed by Ordway [J. Portland Cem. Ass. Res. Dev. Lab. (1960), 2, 28] is described. By selecting suitable compositions in the CaO–Al2O3–Fe2O3 system it is shown that the terminal compositions of the three compatible phases based on CaO.Al2O3, 12CaO.7Al2O3 and 2CaO.Fe2O3 can be derived from the bulk chemical compositions of the equilibrated multiphase samples and their X-ray powder intensity data. Some comments are made on the experimental difficulties of such an analysis.
