Abstract The visible (λ ∼ 589nm) and IR (λ ∼ 820nm) radiation has been detected, when two counterpropagating light pulses, nondegenerate in frequency, interacted with sodium vapour. The generated IR radiation was attributed to the fluorescence between 3D and 3P sodium levels, while conical geometry of visible radiation indicated the parametric origin of detected emission.
