Notes: Seismometers for measuring horizontal vibrations respond not only to the required ground motion but also to unwanted tilts, caused by atmospheric or local effects. Because of the equivalence of inertial and gravitational accelerations, it is not possible to separate these effects in a single instrument. However, absolute rotation is detectable and an angular accelerometer has been developed, responding only to tilt and not to either horizontal or vertical ground motion. The design of the instrument is very similar to that of a modern horizontalcomponent seismometer, comprising a double balanced pendulum pivoted at its centre of gravity and operated in a force feedback configuration. Details of the design, testing and cabibration are presented. The instrument was operated in a seismic vault for several weeks, together with standard borehole and surface-mounted seismometers. The outputs were digitized and recorded, and the results analysed off-line on a pc using a data analysis package.Recordings obtained under different conditions of wind and seismic activity are presented and attempts made to reduce the effects of tilt on the surface recordings by subtracting the signal from the angular accelerometer after suitable processing. The tilt signal proved to be rather low, except on very windy days, so that complete correction for tilt was not possible. Suggestions are made for improving the instrument to make it useful in seismic vaults.

Notes: An apparatus is described for the measurement of Young's modulus, E, and the energy loss per cycle, ΔW/W, of small beam-shaped rock samples, over the frequency range 2 to 40 c/s. Results are given for seven sedimentary and two igneous types of rock. An increase of between 1 % and 3 % in E, and of up to 100 % in ΔW/W, occurred over this range. Experiments on rocks containing moisture showed a decrease in the magnitude of E (at 2 c/s), an increased frequency variation of E, and a greater and almost linear increase of ΔW/W with frequency. The effect of oil was similar except that the magnitude of E at 2 c/s was unaffected. It is suggested that the moisture and oil results are due to viscous movements of fluid through the pores in the rock, and that the changes in E and ΔW/W with frequency, in dry rocks, are due to a small viscous mechanism operative at low frequencies.

Notes: Salmon eggs were incubated at 5, 8 or 11° C from fertilization to hatching. At Gorodilov stages 25, 27, 29, 31 and 33 transverse sections of whole embryos (at somite level 10–15) were prepared for histochemistry and electron microscopy. At every stage up to hatching, cross–sectional areas of the embryos were not different between temperatures, and from stage 27 onwards there was also no difference in the ratio of white to red muscle. However, there were more muscle fibres but of smaller average diameter in both the red and white muscle for the colder temperature embryos. At hatching there were also more nuclei (per cross–section) in the colder embryos but more nuclei per muscle fibre in the warmer embryos. In all cases the 8° C embryos were intermediate between 5 and 11° C embryos in their muscle parameters. Fast and slow muscle fibres could only be distinguished in the embryos by alkali–stable ATPase reactions. Succinic dehydrogenase activity was low in embryonic fish. No differences between the temperature groups were detected in the histochemical reactions for either ATPase or succinic dehydrogenase activities.

Notes: [Auszug] IT is perhaps idle to speculate on what future generations of ecologists will, with their hindsight, deem to be the important developments of the mid-1970s. One area of ecology, however, that almost certainly will not go unheeded is the complexity-stability problem: not that this is a problem which ...

Notes: [Auszug] The instrument utilizes circularly polarized filtered rubidium light to optically pump1 a rubidium gas cell to a state of magnetization, which in turn is destroyed by the depumping effect of a radio-frequency field applied to the gas cell. The frequency of this radio-frequency field is the Larmor ...

Notes: [Auszug] Micropulsations of the PC3, PC4, and Pi2 (periods 10-150 sec) types have been detected in the rate of change of magnetic field by means of three-component inductors cored with 'Permalloy' based at, and in the vicinity of, Hartland Point, Devon. Observations during March?July 1966 were made at ...

Notes: [Auszug] Absorption and dispersion in a single rock sample have usually been measured at frequencies higher than those observed in seismology and over a range of only one or two decades1'2. Because different samples measured over different frequency ranges generally show a constant Q and constant moduli, it ...

Notes: Summary Experiments are described that were designed to investigate the effects of food availability and rate of exploitation on the growth and production of populations of Folsomia candida (Willem). In an initial experiment in which there was excess food it was found that increasing the rate of exploitation resulted in increases in both the numerical and biomass productivity of the populations. In a second experiment it was shown that, when there is severe competition for food, the rate of exploitation does not affect either the biomass or the numerical production. It is concluded that the effect of overcrowding, in the form of competition for space, does contribute to the growth in numbers of populations, but that the supply of food plays a more important role in regulating the population. Anomalous results, showing that exploitation has a lesser effect when there is severe competition for food, are discussed.
