Description: We report a new type of ultramafi c pseudotachylyte that forms a fault- and injection-vein network hosted in the mantle-derived Balmuccia peridotite (Italy). In the fault vein the pseudotachylyte is now deformed and recrystallized into a spinel-lherzolite facies ultramylonite, made of a fi ne (〈2 μm) aggregate of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and spinel, with small amounts of amphibole and dolomite. Electron backscattered diffraction study of the ultramylonite shows a clear crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) of olivine. The fault vein pseudotachylyte overprints a spinel-lherzolite facies amphibole-bearing mylonite, indicating that shear localization accompanying chemical reaction had taken place in the peridotite before seismic slip produced frictional melting. The occurrence of amphibole in the host mylonite and that of dolomite as well as amphibole in the matrices of ultramylonite and pseudotachylyte may indicate that fl uid was present and had evolved in its composition from H2O-rich to CO2-rich during ductile deformation with metamorphic reactions, which may account for the observed rheological transition from ductile to brittle behavior. The spinel-lherzolite facies assemblage in mylonites, P-T estimations from pyroxene geothermometry and carbonate reactions, and the type of olivine CPO in deformed pseudotachylyte indicate that both the preseismic and the postseismic ductile deformations occurred at ~800 °C and 0.7–1.1 GPa.

Notes: We report here the phylogenetic characterization of small subunit rRNA gene sequences obtained by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of mixed population DNA extracted directly from soil in a soybean field without culturing the organisms. The phylogenetic analysis of 17 soil clones by the neighbour-joining method shows that the soil sample contained broadly diverse prokaryotes; a clone related to archaea, a clone to gram-positive bacteria with high G+C contents, two clones to green sulphur bacteria, four clones to proteobacteria, and nine clones were not in clusters of any previously reported bacterial groups, which suggests they belong to members of novel groups in Bacteria. In addition, the archaeal sequence, FIE16, is phylogenetically similar to ANTARCTIC 12, a clone obtained from surface waters of Antarctica by PCR. Their occurrence in both the ocean and soil suggests a global distribution of this archaeal group. In conclusion, rRNA gene sequences recovered from soil biomass document the occurrence of many more bacterial lingeages than have been recognized previously through cultivation-based techniques.

Notes: The evolution of step bunching on vicinal GaAs(001) annealed at different temperatures in AsH3 and H2 ambient was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. The results provided aspects of the evolution of step bunching from the initial to the final stage. We observed a appearance of additional step bunchings which have a peculiar azimuth of 〈210〉, 〈21¯0〉, 〈310〉, and 〈31¯0〉.

Notes: Similar step bunchings which consist of 7–9 single steps were observed by scanning tunneling microscopy on both vicinal GaAs(100) surfaces grown by metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition (MOCVD) and annealed in AsH3 atmosphere. Growth parameters, including deposition rate, layer thickness, V/III ratio, and growth temperature, did not affect the morphology of the step bunching. These results indicate that step bunching is induced during the annealing process and its surface morphology is preserved during MOCVD growth for a wide range of growth parameters.

Notes: The effect of beam thickness in a two-dimensional Cherenkov laser is investigated on the basis of the fluid model for the electron beam. In the analysis, the transverse variation of the drift velocity for the electron beam is taken into account. The numerical simulation shows that there exists an optimum beam thickness for an efficient use of the electron beam in the Cherenkov laser. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigate the nonlinear characteristics of space-charge waves, which propagate along a relativistic electron beam drifting near the surface of a semi-infinite Kerr-like medium, under the condition that the drift velocity of the electron beam does not exceed the Cherenkov threshold. On the basis of the linear fluid model for the electron beam and the stationary wave analysis, we obtain some interesting features for the nonlinear space-charge waves such as power dependence of wave numbers and hysteresis characteristics. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We demonstrate the alteration of spontaneous emissions in semiconductor microcavity triodes, in which the carriers are injected by current into a single quantum well (QW) active region and the emission wavelength was varied by the voltage applied to the QW through the quantum confined Stark effect. The clear changes in the emission spectra and radiation patterns with the change of the voltage manifest that the spontaneous emission is well modified by the microcavity under the control of the applied voltage. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
