Notes: This paper discusses the corporate governance of banking institutions in developing economies. This is an important issue given the essential role that banks play in the financial systems of developing economies and the widespread banking reforms that these economies have implemented. Based on a theoretical discussion of the corporate governance of banks, we suggest that banking reforms can only be fully implemented once a prudential regulatory system is in place. An integral part of banking reforms in developing economies is the privatisation of banks. We suggest that corporate governance reforms may be a prerequisite for the successful divestiture of government ownership. Furthermore, we also suggest that the increased competition resulting from the entrance of foreign banks may improve the corporate governance of developing-economy banks.

Notes: This study is based on the premise that the success/failure of financial sector reforms depends heavily on country specific factors and makes an attempt to examine these factors in the Indian context. The financial sector reforms analysed in this paper include the deregulation of interest rates, increasing competition and foreign ownership, and the introduction of financial supervision. We argue that an economic rationale for a gradualist approach to financial reform is that it is stability enhancing. Furthermore, we suggest that India’s complex political economy has resulted in a gradual approach to reform, and this approach has been successful along the dimension of banking stability.

Notes: Trout fitted with dorsal aortic cannulae were subjected to 6 min of intensive exercise and monitored over the following 12 h recovery period. Delayed mortality was 40%; the majority of deaths occurred 4–8 h post-exercise. Surviving fish exhibited a short-lived haemoconcentration reflected in increased haematocrit, haemoglobin, plasma protein, Na+ and Ch- levels; an extended rise in plasma [K+]; a quickly corrected respiratory acidosis; and a more prolonged metabolic acidosis in concert with a rise in blood lactate. Dying fish exhibited very similar trends except for a significantly greater metabolic acidosis, lower plasma [Cl-], and the apparent accumulation of an unknown anion in the blood prior to death. Cardiac failure did not occur. Blood metabolic acid levels, while elevated, were only ∼ 50% of peak lactate anion levels and well within the normal range of tolerance, as were all other changes observed in the blood of non-survivors. The hypothesis that post-exercise mortality is due to excessive ‘lactic acid’ accumulation in the blood is discounted. It is suggested that intracellular acidosis may be the proximate cause of death.

Notes: [Auszug] Experiments were made on the pond snail, Lymnaea stagnalis. Neurones were initially screened using light microscope autoradiography after exposure to tritiated histamine, on the assumption that those neurones which contain histamine would also preferentially take up the amine from the extracellular ...

Notes: Abstract A method is presented for solving time-varying independent modal-space Kalman filter equations in terms of 2×2 transition matrices, rather than in terms of the more commonly used 4×4 transition matrix solution technique. The basic method consists of replacing the well-known product form solution for the differential matrix Riccati equation with an alternate solution form which consists of a steady-state plus transient term.

Notes: Abstract Closed-from solutions are derived for a class of tracking problems including a linear optimal regulator and a prefilter for a time-invariant plant. The solutions for the prefilter equation and state trajectory, coupled by the Riccati equation, are exponentially related to the stability matrix of the plant. A computational procedure is presented in recursive form when the desired output state dynamics is assumed linear and time-invariant. Several examples are given for illustration.
