    Notes: Various tectonic features are present in the Meso-Cenozoic basin units of the Sabina region (Central Apennines, Italy): Mio-Pliocene northeasterly verging thrusts are followed by Plio-Pleistocene, N-S oriented right-lateral strike-slip faults. Stable isotope geochemistry and examination of meso- and microstructures show that strain conditions differed through the course of tectonic history. Carbon and oxygen isotope analyses of the calate-filled extensional fractures, the sigmoidal veins present between stylolitic cleavage surfaces, and fault plane surfaces with differing motion, demonstrate those different geneses.The “C/'” C of the older calcite-filling fractures (present both in the thrust and the strike-slip systems) suggests a deposition from shallow, fresh water circulation. Furthermore, the calcite fill of en echelon systems, that occur in the southernmost Plio-Pleistocene units, is clearly the result of a more recent, right-lateral strike-slip movement, connected with shallow water circulation within Mesozoic limestones.The sigmoidal vein fills are derived from solid-state pressure solution processes which were the result of strike-slip movement. The deformation pattern related to the older thrust system is similar, but less intense; this also demonstrates general recrystallization processes in a closed system.This suggests that the total shortening of the deformed sections is lower than that obtained on the basis of solution on stylolitic planes, because a sigruficant volume of dissolved carbonates remained in the system.Stable isotope analysis also confirms that the deformational history of strongly cleaved rocks in the Sabina region took place in two phases and that extensional fractures formed before stylolithic planes, as suggested by structural and field observations.

    Notes: The carbon isotope ratio (δ13C%) in leaves and berries of Vitis vinifera L. was determined during the fruiting season.The δ13C was from −24.6 to −26.3 in total leaf tissue, while it is from −22.7 to −24.3 in the aqueous extract of leaves. The δ13C in the berries was more stable, around −24, with no change during ripening. Malic and tartaric acid, isolated from the berries at the onset of ripening, showed a δ13C of −23.5 and −23.0 respectively. It was concluded that malic acid accumulated in the berries at the onset of ripening is not formed directly through β-carboxylation.

    Notes: Abstract 18O/16O,87Sr/86Sr and chemical analyses were made on 39 lavas and ignimbrites from M. Vulsini, the most northerly district of the K-rich Quaternary Roman Province of Italy. These rocks belong mainly to the undersaturated, leucite-bearing (High-K) series, but also included are samples from the less abundant, SiO2-saturated, hypersthene-(quartz)-normative (Low-K) series. The effects of post-eruption alteration on theδ 18O of these lavas were taken into account by analyzing phenocrysts or by using the extrapolation procedure developed for the nearby Alban Hills center. Because of the high Sr contents (500–2400 ppm), the87Sr/86Sr ratios of these rocks were little affected by such alteration processes. The M. Vulsini volcanics have Sr- and O-isotopic ratios much less uniform, and on the average much higher, than at any of the other volcanic centers of the province:87Sr/86Sr=0.7097 to 0.7168;δ 18O=6.5 to 13.8. This is attributable to the fact that M. Vulsini is one of the sites of greatest crustal assimilation and hybridism between K-rich Roman magmas and SiO2-rich Tuscan anatectic magmas. The High-K series parent magmas at M. Vulsini had a very high and uniform87Sr/86Sr=0.7102 to 0.7104, and a somewhat more variableδ 18O=+5.5 to +7.5; they must have come from an upper mantle source region previously metasomatically enriched in87Sr and LIL elements. These18O/16O and87Sr/86Sr ratios are identical to the parent magma at the Alban Hills, 120 km to the south, where Low-K lavas are absent. Low-K series magmas at M. Vulsini originated from a lower-87Sr source region than the High-K series (〈0.7097); a similar relationship is observed in all of the other localities in Italy where the two magma series coexist.

    Notes: Abstract Carbon and oxygen isotopic analyses have been carried out on carbonates from lavas, ejectites and sedimentary formations in the region of the Alban Hills. The calcite occurring in the lavas, both in veins and cavities and dispersed in the groundmass shows within each flow a fairly uniform isotopic composition not different from that normally observed in sedimentary carbonates, except in the case of one particular flow, where unusually low δ 13C values were recorded. The latter are discussed in terms of a possible contribution of organic carbon or of isotopically light carbonates, the presence of which in the Alban Hills area had been previously recorded. The ejectites examined comprise both limestone and dolostone blocks of various degree of metamorphism and materials of uncertain origin, some of which containing carbon and oxygen of isotopic composition wholly different from that of all carbonates analysed in this work, approaching the range observed in some carbonatites. The isotopic data and the geochemical features of the latter materials are discussed in terms of thermal metamorphism of limestones and of a possible syntexis of evaporite materials. The δ 18O and δ 13C values of certain marine limestones from major Mesozoic sedimentary formations in the region are also reported.

    Notes: Abstract Sulfur isotope analyses were made on 14 alunites from volcanic and sedimentary rocks widely different in chemistry and age from southern Tuscany and northern Latium, central Italy. The δ34S values range from +0.7 to +9.6‰, and appear not to be related to the nature of the host rock. Geological and isotopic evidence suggests that all the alunites formed by supergenic oxidation of sulfides. Sulfides occurring with alunites in the volcanic rocks of Latium can be divided into an isotopically light group of probably magmatic origin (δ34S=−1.5 to +3.4‰) and a heavy one with δ34S=+6.0 to +10.3‰, tentatively interpreted as deposited by hydrothermal fluids that leached sulfides of similar 34S/32S from the deep basement. Such an interpretation is consistent with recent studies indicating that in the perityrrhenian belt of Latium exists a continuation, at depth, of the Tuscan stratigraphic series, rich in sulfides with δ34 from +6 to +12‰.
