Description: Application of a dc magnetic field on an RF hydrogen gas dissociator led to the development of a more efficient source of atoms for hydrogen masers. The influence of the applied magnetic field on the plasma and some details of the resulting enhancement of the dissociation efficiency are discussed. Ways that this improved efficiency can result in the enhancement of the operation and field life of hydrogen masers, as well as aid the development of spaceborne masers, are considered.

Description: Presented here are the results obtained from performance evaluation of a pair of Sigma Tau Standards Corporation Model VLBA-112 active hydrogen maser frequency standards. These masers were manufactured for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) for use on the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) project and were furnished to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for the purpose of these tests. Tests on the two masers were performed in the JPL Frequency Standards Laboratory (FSL) and included the characterization of output frequency stability versus environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, magnetic field, and barometric pressure. The performance tests also included the determination of phase noise and Allan variance using both FSL and Sigma Tau masers as references. All tests were conducted under controlled laboratory conditions, with only the desired environmental and operational parameters varied to determine sensitivity to external environment.

Description: The application of a sensitive hydrogen gas detector led to the observation of a significant increase in the efficiency of atom production of a magnetically enhanced dissociator. An increase of about 7000% in the production of atoms in the hyperfine state desired for maser operation is observed at certain values of the applied magnetic field. A preliminary test of the dissociator in the maser led to an observed increase of 6.18 dB in the maser power.

Description: The presently used JPL hydrogen maser suspended atomic storage bulb and a rigid, single-plane mounted bulb are compared. The new bulb incorporates three major design changes: (1) mounting design; (2) alterations to the collimator; and (3) decrease in mass. These design changes are expected to increase the long-term stability of the frequency standard by reducing its sensitivity to vibration and thermal effects.

Description: A new fast autotuner for the hydrogen maser was implemented. By modulating the cavity, a phase shift in the maser output signal is induced which is proportional to the cavity tuning error. The phase shift is detected and fed back to a varactor tuner to stabilize the cavity against long-term drifts. Also, a PIN-diode cavity modulator which gives no incidental frequency shift over a very wide range of operation was developed. Modulated at over 200 Hz, it allows variations in maser cavity frequency to be compensated with a loop gain greater than 1000. Compensation of incidental amplitude modulation of the output was demonstrated.

Description: Cavity-modulation tuning system maintains resonance of hydrogen-maser cavity automatically, stabilizing maser frequency, without introducing undesirable frequency modulation. System tunes maser cavity rapidly by modulating one of physical characteristics of cavity affecting resonant frequency. Frequency-controlling components of tuning system placed at maser cavity, within maser vacuum. Thermal environment well controlled, and device insensitive to driving signal. Features contribute to stability of maser frequency.
