    Call number: ZSP-124-55
    In: ANARE research notes
Description / Table of Contents: A twelve month sampling program was conducted in the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica to determine the coastal marine fauna of the area. A species list of the animals inhabiting the benthic, pelagic, planktonic and ice / water interface communities investigated is presented with ecological information about each collection site. Most of the collected species appear to be circumpolar and some information is provided on their distribution within the Vestfold Hills region.

Notes: Abstract. Oxygen plays a dual role in affecting the rate of respiration of avocado fruit (Persea americana Mill, cv. Hass). The respiration rate v. oxygen concentration curve for steady state avocado fruit respiration is biphasic. The curve becomes monophasic, however, when measured under conditions of rapidly changing oxygen concentration in a closed circulating system. The results are interpreted as indicating that oxygen at relatively high concentrations modulates respiration independent of its interaction with the terminal oxidase—presumably cytochrome oxidase.A computer model is presented which takes into account the effect of diffusion barriers on the kinetics of oxygen utilization as a function of concentration in avocado fruit. The model is used to make predictions concerning the apparent Km of the terminal oxidase or oxidases in avocado fruit. It is concluded that the apparent Km of the terminal oxidase of uninhibited avocado fruit is that of cytochrome oxidase, and that the alternative, cyanide-resistant oxidase of avocado fruit does not contribute appreciably to the uninhibited respiration of preclimacteric or climacteric avocado fruit.

Notes: Radiaxial fibrous calcite, a common cavity fill in ancient limestones, is characterized by curved twin lamellae, optic axes that converge away from the substrate and subcrystals which diverge in this same direction. The optic axes radiate about three or four axes located in positions between adjacent crystals and orientated parallel with the crystal elongation. The crystals are commonly turbid with inclusions, which may be concentrated along twin lamellae and subcrystal and inter-crystalline boundaries, or form zones parallel to the substrate. Some inclusion patterns reveal the position of former crystal faces. From a consideration of the occurrences, gross morphological characters, the fabrics of the crystals and the inclusion patterns, radiaxial fibrous calcite is interpreted as a replacement of an early diagenetic acicular cement, composed of interfering bundles of radiating crystals. It is suggested that replacement takes place by a solution-precipitation process and the migration of a fluid film through the acicular host, with replacement occurring most rapidly between bundles of acicular carbonate. The optic axis pattern of the fibrous calcite is considered to be inherited from the c-axis orientations of the host acicular crystals. Fibrous calcite intercrystalline boundaries form as fractures after replacement. Some inclusion patterns record the characters of the replaced acicular cement; others, formed of impurities reorganized during the replacement, reveal the form of the replacement front.

Notes: : Data were collected from 902 rural and urban residents of Ohio during the winter of 2003 to assess attitudes toward the production of genetically modified (GM) plants and animals. Attitudes were assessed using Likert-type attitude statements. The theoretical perspective used in the investigation was developed from diffusion and risk perception theories. Regression modeling demonstrated that the theoretical model was very good for predicting variability in attitudes toward GM plants and animals. Approximately 61% of the variance in the dependent variable was explained by the statistical model. The findings are discussed in the context of the social acceptability of GM food and fiber products among Ohio residents.

Notes: Summary The zooplankton community of a shallow coastal area in Eastern Antarctica was found to be one of low species diversity dominated by Copepoda. It was comprised of the more common Antarctic oceanic copepod species, medusae, molluscs, euphausiids, several copepod species associated with the ice-water interface and, in summer, benthic fauna larvae. Most species of copepods displayed a marked seasonality in abundance with peak numbers between March and May. It is proposed that several factors, including phytoplankton seasonality contribute to the zooplankton species composition, zooplankton seasonality, and to the temporal differences in the period of maximum abundance between copepod species. Annual vertical migratory behaviour in conjunction with the circulation of Prydz Bay are important determining factors for those species which can be considered as oceanic; Calanoides acutus, Calanus propinquus, Ctenocalanus citer, Metridia gerlachei, Oithona similis and Oncaea curvata. However, for copepod species which can be classified as inshore residents, such as Stephos longipes, Paralabidocera antarctica and Drepanopus bispinosus, it is their association with the ice water interface that determines their seasonal appearance and abundance. Some differences were established between the zooplankton community of the Vestfold Hills and that of other Antarctic coastal regions. This may be attributed, in part, to the extensive shallow areas of the Vestfold Hills coastal region. Spatial distribution of the zooplankton with depth and between sites was investigated and found to be essentially homogenous. When differences were established, in the majority of cases all species present, all age classes and both sexes contributed to the differences.
