Notes: Abstract The aim of the present work is to compare photographic observations of the Galilean satellites of Jupiter with the theory developed by Sampson at the beginning of the century and corrected and implemented recently by Lieske. The comparisons between the observed and computed values give differences in geocentric angular distances of the order of 0″.08 for modern observations (1968 to 1977) and of the order of 0″.14 for older ones (1913 to 1928). These results lead to the suggestion that important long period defects still exist in the theory of Sampson-Lieske. This is not surprising, due to the difficulties of the computation of the long-period inequalities in mean longitudes, even in a first-order theory.

Notes: Abstract Exact corotations are equilibrium points in the phase space of the asteroidal elliptic restricted problem of three bodies averaged over the synodic period, at a mean-motions resonance. If the resonant critical angle is θ=(p+q)λ jup −pλ−qϖ, exact corotations are double resonant motions defined by the conditionsdθ/dt=0 andd(ϖ−ϖ jup )/dt=0. The first condition is characteristic of the periods resonance(p + q) : p and the second one is a secular resonance equivalent to that usually known as thev 5-resonance. This paper presents the symmetric solutions θ=0 (mod π), ϖ=ϖ jup (mod π). Corotations have a coherence property which is unique in non-collisional Celestial Mechanics: An elementary calculation shows that, in the neighbourhood of these solutions, the motions cluster aroundp independent longitude values and are, in each cluster, as close together as θ and ϖ are close to the equilibrium values.

Notes: Summary The rigid-plastic finite element method is applied to the analysis of the three-dimensional deformation behaviour, in particular the forming of edge lamination during the multi-pass hot roughing process of aluminium. the calculation is carried out for various rolling conditions and reduction schedules, and their influence on the edge lamination is examined. The results suggest that the crop loss due to the edge lamination can be reduced by increasing the roll diameter, the reduction per pass and the initial width of the slab.

Notes: Abstract In order to improve the thermal oxidative stability of the neodymium series (Nd2Fe14B) magnetic powder, plasma polymerization of benzene, styrene and acrylonitrile on the powder was carried out and its effect was examined. A strong hydrophobicity was revealed on the surface of the magnetic powder by the plasma treatment, and the thermal oxidative stability and magnetic properties of the powder were remarkably improved. Magnetic properties of the plastic magnets prepared with the magnetic powder coated with plasma polymer of acrylonitrile on the surface, were superior to plastic magnets prepared with untreated powder.

Notes: Abstract Styrene (St)-acrylic acid (AA) copolymer plates were synthesized in the frames made of glass, aluminum (Al) and poly(difluoroethylene) (PDFE). Surface properties of the prepared copolymer plates were characterized with regard to critical surface tension (γ C ), chemical components by IR analysis and surface energies (total energy, γ S ; dispersion force components, γ S d ; polar component, γ S p ; hydrogen bonding component, γ S h ) and the following results were obtained. The γ C values of the copolymer plates increased with AA content and also depended on the sort of the used frame. The increasing order of the γ C values of the copolymer plates corresponded to those of the used frames, namely, PDFE frame 〈 Al frame 〈 Glass frame. The prepared copolymer plates with low AA contents (ca. 10 mol%) were enriched in the AA moiety in the surface layer regardless of the kind of the used frame. The total and the individual components of the surface free energies of the copolymer plates were largely affected by the property of the used frame. The glass frame gave the plate with higher γ S h values suggesting preferential orientation of the polar site of AA component.

Notes: Abstract The changes in the surface properties of oxygen plasma-treated polyethylene films during ageing in various atmospheres (water, dry nitrogen gas, and hexane) were studied from the viewpoint of the interaction of the surface functional groups formed on the films and the ageing media. The XPS (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and the SSIMS (static secondary ion mass spectrometry) spectra indicated the formation of polar groups containing oxygen such as C=O on the film surface. The changes in the critical surface tension (γC) of the film with ageing time were largely affected by the ageing atmospheres: the γC value of the film aged in water increased, and those of the films aged in nitrogen gas and hexane decreased with an increase in ageing time. These different tendencies among the ageing media could be understood reasonably with examining the surface free energy ratios (the total energy, γ S tot , the dispersion force component, γ S d /γ S tot , the polar component, γ S p /γ S tot , the hydrogen bonding component, γ S h /γ S tot ) of the films. The ageing in water of which γL is large gave the films with higher γ S p /γ S tot values, suggeting that the overturn and/or the orientation of the polar groups toward the water phase occurred so as to minimize the discrepancy of the surface free energy between the polymer surface and water. On the other hand, the ageing in nitrogen gas and hexane media of which γL are small gave the films with lower γ S p /γ S tot and γ S h /γ S tot values, suggesting the overturn and/or the orientation of the polar groups into the bulk polymer.
