Description / Table of Contents:
Summary All the plants of the genusVicia L. containing hydrocyanic acid belong to a biochemical group of species which is characterized by the occurrence of the non-proteinogenic amino acid β-cyanoalanine, this species group is closely related in taxonomical respect, too (species aggregate ofV. sativa). The mentioned amino acid and the cyanogenic glycoside vicianine are biosynthetically connected, both are involved in the metabolism of the phenylalanine. Only those taxa are able to accumulate the vicianine in traceable amounts which have to be considered as the more advanced ones of the group. The quantitative content of this cyanogenic glycoside has been discussed in detail for the different species, the practical importance of the occurrence of the cyanogenic compound inV. sativa has been stressed, all strains of this species free from vicianine are enlisted especially.
Abstract:
Notes:
