Notes: Summary Convincing evidence of biological effects during long-term abnormal weather conditions is very rare because usually no continuous series of physiological data from the same animals or humans (either eingle or in groups) have been collected over many years during the period preceding the meteorological event. Since 1955 at the Biometeorological Research centre Leiden, about 220,000 blood data were collected from healthy male blood donors at Leiden, The Netherlands, and about 110,000 data at Oslo, Norway, since 1966. It was found that during the meteorologically abnormal year of 1974, which was abnormal in many parts of the world, both in Leiden and Oslo abnormal biological patterns occurred in blood sedimentation rate, haemoglobin, diastolic blood pressure, γ-globulin levels, Piccardip-test percentages and a few other biological parameters. A more complete monograph will be published at a later date.

Notes: Conclusion The various physiological mechanisms described, which are triggered by meteorological stimuli, may help to explain the effect of psychosomatic factors on cancer29. Whereas in purely psychosomatic research it may be difficult to study the real mechanisms involved, biometeorological studies on the effects of meteorological stress may assist future psychosomatic cancer research. Various studies suggest the great influence of thermoregulatory processes on the hormonal functions in the human body. Disturbance of these processes may lead to cancer development. Experiments byTromp andBouma have shown the very poor thermoregulatory efficiency of cancer patients. Studies byLea, Lee, McVay, Krasnow, Glaser, De Sauvage Nolting and others confirm the effect of meteorological stresses (in particular thermal stresses) on thermoregulatory processes and cancer development. The similarity in physiological processes during meteorological and psychological stresses may facilitate the studies on the influence of psychosomatic factors on cancer.

Notes: Abstract During the period from 1955 to 1966 blood sedimentation rate (Westergren method) patterns of a group of healthy male donors at the blood bank in Leiden, The Netherlands, were studied and correlated with meteorological factors. Values of 1–2 mm/1st hr were most frequent; the percentage of donors with these values varied considerably between donor days. If strong atmospheric cooling preceded the donor day the percentage of donors with 1–2 mm/1st hr was high and if atmospheric warming preceded the donor day it was low. The highest percentage of donors with these low BSR values was observed in winter and the lowest in summer. The greatest difference between average winter and summer values was 23% in 1958.The yearly average percentage of 1 to 2 mm/1st hr was 29.9% in 1955; it increased to 59% in 1958, decreased to 30.7% in 1960, increased again to 39.3% in 1963 and decreased gradually to 22.9% in 1966.

Notes: Abstract During the periods June–October 1969 and January 1970 from 792 different male blood donors the fibrinogen content, blood sedimentation rate, haemoglobin content and blood pressure were determined in relation to the age of the donors. A number of significant relationships were found which could partly explain the long term (yearly) fluctuations in the blood sedimentation rate pattern of healthy male population groups. It is pointed out that these studies may prove to be important for the study of the effect of meteorological stimuli on arteriosclerotic heart diseases.
