    Notes: Summary During development, the egg albumen of calcified land snail eggs becomes more and more acid, correlated directly with a constant rise in the calcium concentration of this albumen. It is suggested that the developing embryo releases some acid metabolite and the subsequent change in albumen pH aids in embryonic absorption of the CaCO3 (calcite) egg shell, used for making the embryonic body shell or skeleton (CaCO3 in the form of aragonite).

    Notes: Abstract The dinitramide salts of ammonia (ADN), hexamethylenetetramine (HDN), potassium (KDN), and sodium (NaDN) showed a linear relationship between the DSC rate of decomposition at the peak maximum and the DEA tanδ value at the low temperature transition peak. As the cation basicity increased in the series ADN〈HDN〈KDN〈NaDN, there was an increase in the low temperature transition peak, the energy barrier for relaxation, and the decomposition peak temperature, and a decrease in the tanδ value at the low temperature transition peak, specific heat capacity, and the rate and enthalpy of decomposition. The more basic salts were more thermally stable (i.e., higher decomposition temperature) and less energetic (i.e., lower enthalpy of decomposition). The more internal free volume (disorder) present in these salts, the higher the rates of relaxation and decomposition. Five aluminum powders of different surface areas were analyzed by DSC in platinum sample pans, and it was found that the enthalpy and rate of oxidation increased as the particle size of Al decreased while the enthalpy of the Al melt decreased. TG showed a two-step weight gain in the oxidation of Al with plateaus in the 650 and 1130°C regions and the percent weight gain increased as the particle size of Al decreased. Variable DSC and TG heating rate studies showed that the activation energies for the first step in the oxidation process increased as the particle size of Al increased.

    Notes: The glass transition temperatures of a binder and filled binder were determined by wide line proton nuclear magnetic resonance and by thermal mechanical analysis. The NMR study indicated only one transition temperature for the binder and three transition temperatures for the filled binder. TMA data gave two transition temperatures each for the binder and for the filled binder. These transition temperatures in the filled binder were interpreted as representing two phases: one for the filler-oriented binder and one for the bulk phase. A comparison of the transition temperatures of the binder and filled binder indicates that the transition temperature of the former is raised by the presence of the filler. It was also found that the presence of water lowered the transition temperature of the filled binder used in this work.

    Notes: Work is reported on the effect of variation of molecular weight distribution on the properties of binder stocks. This work used three prepolymers (polypropylene glycol 1000, 2000, and 4000 and polypropylene glycol 400, 1000, and 2000) of different molecular weight and known molecular weight distribution. The prepolymer of the middle molecular weight was employed as standard, and stocks were prepared from it. To this prepolymer was added some of the high and low molecular weight prepolymers in proportions such that the crosslink density of stocks made from the mixture was the same as that of stocks made from the middle molecular weight prepolymer alone. Two series were prepared with different crosslinking agents. The proportions of high and low molecular weight prepolymer were successively increased until finally none of the middle molecular weight remained. Heterogeneity indexes of the glycols and their mixtures were measured by gel permeation chromatography. Elongation at break, modulus of elasticity, and extent of solvent swelling were determined on the crosslinked stocks. Properties which vary with crosslink density were found to show decreasing values with increasing heterogeneity index even though the stocks were formulated to a constant crosslink density. Narrow-distribution stocks reach the maximum degree of cure faster than the broader-distribution stocks. Infrared and thermal analysis confirm that monodisperse polymer has a greater extent of reaction than heterodisperse polymer. Results showed that the variation in elongation at break to be expected because of lot-to-lot variations in heterogeneity index is probably not greater than the experimental variation in the elongation test below a heterogeneity index of 1.5. Above 1.5, however, if the effects observed are entirely due to variation in heterogeneity index, lot-to-lot variations in molecular weight distribution cannot be ignored. An explanation is presented based on the varying ability of prepolymer molecules of different size to diffuse through uniform mesh openings resulting in lower final extents of reaction for broad distribution material.

    Notes: Nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation and line width studies were performed on two carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene polymers and their corresponding binders at temperatures from -170 to 25°C. It was observed that the line widths of the binders increased as the functionality of the corresponding liquid polymers increased. In addition, glass transition temperatures and activation energies obtained from line width measurements were determined. From pulse measurements the magnitude of the relaxation time T1 and the temperature at which T1 is a minimum were determined for a polymer and its corresponding binder. These empirical quantities for the carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene polymers were lower than those of the corresponding binders because of less restraints in the internal motions of the polymer chain.

    Notes: The functionalities of a series of carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene samples (CTPB) were calculated from an infrared spectroscopic study of the samples reacting to the gel point with tris-[1-(2-methyl)aziridinyl] phosphine oxide (MAPO), Epon X801, and glycerol. Identical functionalities were calculated when Epon X801 and glycerol were used as curing agents. Higher functionalities for CTPB with MAPO were due to additional reactions that MAPO underwent with hydroxyl groups and water, present in carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene, and with itself (homopolymerization). Rate constants were calculated for the homopolymerization of MAPO in Nujol, in nonfunctional polybutadiene, and in CTPB. The homopolymerization resulted in an increase and then a gradual decrease in MAPO functionality, which was in agreement with that predicted from theoretical considerations.
