Notes: [Auszug] POSITIVE rays of the alkali metals were first obtained by Gehrcke and Reichenheim by using as anode a heated metal strip upon which a suitable salt was melted. Later they substituted for this a specially constructed composite anode which yielded the rays without the necessity of external ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN the issue of NATURE for December 19, p. 900, Dr. A. J. Dempster states that he has found that slowly moving protons pass almost freely through helium atoms without being neutralised. In this connexion it may be of interest to state that I have found in the course of experiments on the ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN a letter to NATURE of June 18, Mr. Reid and I described the rings formed when a beam of cathode rays was sent at normal incidence through a thin film of celluloid and struck a photograph plate placed some distance behind the film. These were attributed to a diffraction of the cathode rays by ...

Notes: [Auszug] DR. RUPP1 finds that if electrons of 80 kilovolts energy are reflected in succession from two gold surfaces at an angle of about one-third of a degree, there is a twelve per cent difference in the intensity of the twice reflected beam according as the two deviations are in the ...

Notes: [Auszug] ELLIS and Wooster (Proc. Roy. Soc., A, 117, p. 109) have shown recently that in the disintegration of radium E the single β-particle emitted has an initial energy which may vary from 40,000 to 1,050,000 volts. This means that the result of disintegration is in some way indeterminate, a ...

Notes: [Auszug] IF a fine beam of homogeneous cathode rays is sent nearly normally through a thin celluloid film (of the order 3 × 10−6 cm. thick) and then received on a photographic plate 10 cm. away and parallel to the film, we find that the central spot formed by the undeflected rays is ...

Notes: [Auszug] Roberts1 and others have reported the emission of delayed neutrons with a period of 12 sec. from uranium under neutron bombardment, but the effect seems to be a small one2, the main body of neutrons being produced in a much shorter period. Green and Alvarez have ...

Notes: [Auszug] WE have been developing during the past year an apparatus to make possible the study of neutrons of known energies within the thermal region. In principle, the apparatus consists of a device for producing a burst of neutrons lasting about 0.5 millisecond at intervals of 5 milliseconds. The ...
