Beschreibung: The shock-tube problem has served as a popular test for numerical hydrodynamics codes. The development of relativistic hydrodynamics codes has created a need for a similar test problem in relativistic hydrodynamics. The analytical solution to the special relativistic shock-tube problem is presented here. The relativistic shock-jump conditions and rarefaction solution which make up the shock tube are derived. The Newtonian limit of the calculations is given throughout. © 1986, Cambridge University Press. All rights reserved.

Beschreibung: A general boundary condition formalism is developed for all types of boundary conditions to which hyperbolic systems are subject; the formalism makes possible a 'cookbook' approach to boundary conditions, by means of which novel boundary 'recipes' may be derived and previously devised ones may be consulted as required. Numerous useful conditions are derived for such CFD problems as subsonic and supersonic inflows and outflows, nonreflecting boundaries, force-free boundaries, constant pressure boundaries, and constant mass flux. Attention is given to the computation and integration of time derivatives.

Beschreibung: Nonreflecting boundary conditions are defined for multidimensional fluid dynamics problems where waves enter and leave the interior of a domain modeled by hyperbolic equations. Separate equations are defined for each type of incoming and outgoing wave. Temporally varying problems are considered in terms of a nonreflecting boundary condition which permit the amplitude of incoming waves to remain constant over time. Conservative expressions are presented that include dissipative terms. Applications of the computational techniques are illustrated with sample results for a traveling shock wave, a shock tube, a spherical explosion and expansion problems on one- and two-dimensions.

Beschreibung: In view of the difficulties that emerge in numerical simulations of time-dependent phenomena involving MHD waves due to waves' artificial reflection at numerical boundaries, where time-dependent magnetic fields outside those boundaries are unknown, a method previously developed for the determination of radiative boundary conditions is generalized for the treatment of isothermal MHD waves. The illustrative problem thus treated is that of the magnetic braking of a rigidly rotating disk which is embedded in a differentially-rotating fluid. The analytic results obtained are compared with those from numerical simulations with and without the present boundary treatment.

Beschreibung: It is likely that turbulence played a major role in the evolution of the solar nebula, which is the flattened disk of dust and gas out of which our solar system formed. Relevant turbulent processes include the transport of angular momentum, mass, and heat, which were critically important to the formation of the solar system. This research will break ground in the modeling of compressible turbulence and its effects on the evolution of the solar nebula. The computational techniques which were developed should be of interest to researchers studying other astrophysical disk systems (e.g., active galactic nuclei), as well as turbulence modelers outside the astrophysics community.

Beschreibung: The lecture notes cover the basic principles of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). They are oriented more toward practical applications than theory, and are intended to serve as a unified source for basic material in the CFD field as well as an introduction to more specialized topics in artificial viscosity and boundary conditions. Each chapter in the test is associated with a videotaped lecture. The basic properties of conservation laws, wave equations, and shock waves are described. The duality of the conservation law and wave representations is investigated, and shock waves are examined in some detail. Finite difference techniques are introduced for the solution of wave equations and conservation laws. Stability analysis for finite difference approximations are presented. A consistent description of artificial viscosity methods are provided. Finally, the problem of nonreflecting boundary conditions are treated.
