    Notes: International human resource management (IHRM) research is becoming an increasingly important topic in light of the relentless pace of globalisation. Three strands of research contribute to our understanding of IHRM, the most dominant being research on human resource management in multinational companies. This paper categorises the literature in the field, highlighting disciplinary introspection within and between each strand. Argues that, by neglecting to embrace the contributions of research from cross-cultural management and comparative human resource management, the field lacks the necessary conceptual and methodological tools to advance. Concludes by suggesting areas where collaboration and cross-fertilisation between disciplines can occur before embarking on the integrative process of theory building.

    Notes: Summary The degree of association between cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) and cattle was studied during one summer on Saint Catherines Island, Georgia, USA. Previous work by Grubb (1976) and others indicated that cattle egrets foraging with cattle require fewer steps and less time to catch prey than egrets foraging without cattle and single egrets catch prey at a higher rate than egrets foraging in groups of two or more with cattle. Accordingly, we predicted that when given a choice egrets should forage with cattle rather than alone, egrets should prefer to associate with standing rather than sitting cattle, and single egrets associated with cattle should be more common than expected by chance. In excess of two-thirds of the egrets accompanied cattle. Neither time of day nor month influenced the degree of association, but egrets in forest were more likely to be associated with cattle than egrets in pasture. Standing cattle were more likely to be accompanied by egrets than were sitting cattle. Single egrets occurred more frequently than expected by chance when accompanying standing cattle but not when associated with sitting cattle. Thus, cattle egrets usually distributed themselves among cattle in the way predicted by optimal foraging theory.

    Notes: Summary The intracellular activity of motoneurons during ‘fictive’ respiration in the isolated lamprey brain was investigated. In association with each respiratory cycle three distinct PSP phases were observed: an early, low amplitude EPSP phase; a large, brief EPSP phase that drove action potentials; and a subsequent IPSP phase (Fig. 1). Selective midline and trigeminal lesions, and trigeminal stimulation, demonstrated that the large excitatory and inhibitory phases were generated by a previously described pair of central pattern generators located in the trigeminal region of the medulla (V) (Figs. 3, 4). Lesion studies further showed that the low amplitude excitatory input could be produced independently of the trigeminal pacemakers (Figs. 3, 5), near the region of the medulla that contains the respiratory motoneurons (VII, IX, and X). In addition to ‘normal’ fictive respiration, the isolated brain was found to produce several variations of the respiratory pattern. These motor programs, ‘coughs’, ‘arousal breathing’, and ‘weak breathing’, were distinguished from the normal respiratory pattern by their much longer burst durations, distinctive underlying synaptic input, and separate coordinating mechanism (Figs. 6–8). Activity similar to these motor programs could be independently produced by the caudal medulla after both trigeminal central pattern generators had been removed (Figs. 5, 6). Lesion studies, and the observation that respiratory-related neural activity ceased in the trigeminal region during the production of these long-duration programs, suggest that the caudal medulla also contains paired central pattern generators involved in lamprey respiration (Figs. 5, 9, 10).

    Notes: Summary Extracellular stimulation over the dorsal funiculus in the spinal cord of lampreys was found to selectively activate prolonged episodes of fictive arousal respiration (Figs. 1, 3). The induced episodes showed comparable increases in cycle frequency and motoneuron burst duration to the spontaneous arousal pattern observed in isolated brain preparations (Fig. 2). Intracellular stimulation of primary sensory neurons with axons in the dorsal funiculus, called ‘dorsal cells’, also elicited the arousal pattern (Fig. 4). Mechanoreceptive dorsal cells respond to cutaneous stimulation. When mechanical stimuli were applied to the skin of intact lampreys (Fig. 6) or to lampreys with ipsilateral vagotomy, arousal respiration was induced (Figs. 7, 8). Bilateral, but not unilateral, trigeminal lesion blocked dorsal cell induction of the arousal response (Fig. 5). Spontaneous arousal respiration was recorded from intact, unrestrained lampreys (Fig. 9). These results suggest that fictive arousal respiration is the in vitro correlate of natural arousal respiration in lampreys, and that one mechanism leading to arousal respiration may be the activity of sensory dorsal cells. A model for respiratory motor pattern switching in lamprey is proposed. The model suggests that the normal and arousal patterns are produced by separately engaging rostral or caudal pattern generators in the medulla, rather than by modifying one pattern generator (Fig. 10).

    Notes: Abstract The design of an aqueous formulation for acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF) requires an understanding of the type of compounds that can either directly or indirectly stabilize the protein. To this end, spectrophotometric turbidity measurements were initially employed to screen the ability of polyanionic ligands, less specific compounds, and variations in solution conditions (temperature and pH) to stabilize aFGF against heat-induced aggregation. It was found that in addition to the well-known protection of aFGF by heparin, a surprisingly wide variety of polyanions (including small sulfated and phosphorylated compounds) also stabilizes aFGF. These polyanionic ligands are capable of raising the temperature at which the protein unfolds by 15–30°C. Many commonly used excipients were also observed to stabilize aFGF in both the presence and the absence of heparin. High concentrations of some of these less specific agents are also able to increase the temperature of aFGF thermal unfolding by as much as 6–12°C as shown by circular dichroism and differential scanning calorimetry. Other compounds were found which protect the chemically labile cysteine residues of aFGF from oxidation. Aqueous formulations of aFGF were thus designed to contain both a polyanionic ligand that enhances structural integrity by binding to the protein and chelating agents (e.g., EDTA) to prevent metal ion-catalyzed oxidation of cysteine residues. While room-temperature storage (30°C) leads to rapid inactivation of aFGF in physiological buffer alone, several of these aFGF formulations are stable in vitro for at least 3 months at 30°C. Three aFGF topical formulations were examined in an impaired diabetic mouse model and were found to be equally capable of accelerating wound healing.

    Notes: Abstract An HPLC/GC-MSD method for the determination of diphenhydramine in rabbit whole blood has been developed and validated. This method is based on a liquid–liquid extraction and reversed-phase Chromatography with ultraviolet absorbance detection monitored at 258 nm. HPLC eluant fractions containing diphenhydramine and the internal standard, orphenadrine, were collected, reex-tracted, then subjected to GC-MSD analysis. Whole blood was utilized, thereby decreasing the required sample volume and increasing the sensitivity of the assay. Diphenhydramine concentrations can be quantitated over a range of 1 to 1000 ng/ml whole blood.

    Notes: The effect of surface adsorption on the structure and stability of proteins is a matter of increasing interest in biotechnology. Therefore, we have examined the effect of adsorption to silica on the thermal stability of 7 proteins employing differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and front surface fluorescence (FSF) spectroscopy. In general, it was found that surface adsorption decreased the thermal stability of the bound protein. Using lysozyme for further studies, DSC, FSF, and FTIR spectroscopies, as well as enzymatic activity measurements, were used to explore the effect of decreasing surface apolarity on stability. It was observed that increasing surface apolarity produced decreasing stability and increasing structural alteration of the adsorbed protein.
