    Notes: A multiple time scale analysis of two four-variable models of the peroxidase–oxidase reaction, the DOP, and the Olsen model, is carried out. It is shown that autonomous limit cycle oscillations are exhibited by the fast subsets of these two models, but only in certain regions of parameter space, confirming the prior suggestion that the slow variable (NADH) is not essential for oscillatory behavior. However, it is found that the slow variable is essential for oscillatory behavior over other ranges of parameter values, and is always essential for complex oscillatory and chaotic behavior. This latter conclusion is based on a study involving driving the fast subset with a sinusoidally varying (NADH). This study suggests the level of coupling between fast and slow variables of an autonomous system necessary to cause the chaos observed in the DOP model. Further study of the driven system allows for the identification of a natural period of the nonoscillatory but bistable fast subsystem and a set of rules for applying a parametric driving in such a way as to generate a more complete Farey sequence from a truncated Farey sequence. These conclusions are used to compare the very similar DOP and Olsen models, which, nevertheless, exhibit quite different Farey sequences and routes to chaos. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Recommended procedures for the home canning of low-acid foods were evaluated for safety. Heat penetration rates were determined and Fo, values calculated using a DEC PDP8e computer. This unique system provided almost instant results and enabled the collection of considerable data. All of the processes evaluated resulted in adequate F0 values except the method suggested for strained pumpkin or squash. This procedure did not provide an adequate heat treatment. Process times at 15 psig for several low-acid foods were developed and evaluated. These results, obtained under home-processing conditions, indicate that shorter process times are possible with foods that heat by convection. Products that heat by conduction or both mechanisms appear to require the same amount of time at 15 psig as at 10 psig. This system (15 psig) will be further evaluated.

    Notes: One of the requirements for establishing thermal processes for canning low-acid foods is the confirmation of the calculated processes obtained from heat penetration data by carrying out an inoculated pack study. The results presented in this paper confirm the processes for home canning low-acid foods at 15 psig suggested by Zottola et al. (JFS-1978) and Nordsiden et al. (JFS-1978). Two heat resistant spore suspensions were used in the inoculated pack, Bacillus stearothermophilus 1518 and Clostridium sporogenes PA 3679. Results obtained using four representative low-acid foods showed the following times at 15 psig were such that no recovery of the test spores, inoculated at 10,000 per container, was observed; peas 10 mm, carrots 7 min, cream-style corn 5.5 min and beef stew with vegetables 15 min.

    Notes: Processing at a higher temperature for a shorter time would be expected to have fewer degradative effects on the nutritional quality and textural properties of foodstuffs. At present 240° F (10 psig) is the most commonly used temperature for home canning, although home pressure canners can be operated at higher pressures than the currently recommended 10 psi. Accordingly, home canning at a higher pressure (15 psig) for a shorter amount of time was investigated. Process values were determined for asparagus, green beans, carrots, corn, peas, squash, beef, fish, beef stew, and green soybeans, and a mean and standard deviation calculated for each product. The mean was then compared in each case with a target process value (derived from the recommended 10 psi process time) plus one standard deviation. In each experimental run the recommended procedure (10 psi) was used as a control. At 15 psi, products which heat by convection currents require approximately l/3 of the time required at 10 psi. However, this much reduction in process time is not possible with products which heat more by conduction.

    Notes: Abstract Analysis of the time of onset of chest pain in 2254 patients with a myocardial infarction admitted to a coronary care unit in Leicester during a 10-year period shows an association with temperature and humidity. During both the most cold and humid times of the year, the relationship is a strong one. A generalized linear model with a log link was used to fit the data and the backward elimination selection procedure suggested a humid, cold day might help to trigger the occurrence of myocardial infarction. In addition, cold weather was found to have a stronger effect on the male population while those men aged between 50 and 70 years were more sensitive to the effect of high humidity.

    Notes: Abstract We describe a range of anthropogenic stressors thatimpact seabirds, review the effects of these stressorson individuals and populations and discuss the roleand value of seabirds as monitors of marine ecosystemhealth. Stressors described are restricted to thosewhich affect seabirds directly or indirectly throughthe marine environment; we have not dealt withterrestrially based stressors such as introducedmammalian predators or loss of habitat, which canpotentially affect seabirds whilst breeding. Wediscuss three broad categories of stress in seabirds.Marine pollutants (including biologicallynon-essential heavy metals, oil, organic pesticidesand polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and plastics),industrial fisheries (further divided into the effectsof depletion of prey stocks and direct mortality), andclimate change. Additionally we highlight the role ofseabirds as monitors of marine ecosystem health,taking the example of long-term mercury contaminationas a case study. We conclude that seabirds are exposedto an increasing array of potential stressors, andthat the impact of a particular source of stress onseabirds varies markedly between species in relationto foraging and breeding ecology. The most seriousthreat to seabirds is direct mortality of adultsresulting from industrial and commercial fishingactivities. In some cases this is a significant threatto individual populations or even entire species.

    Description: Methane (CH4) impacts climate as the second strongest anthropogenic greenhouse gas and air quality by influencing tropospheric ozone levels. Space-based observations have identified the Four Corners region in the Southwest United States as an area of large CH4 enhancements. We conducted an airborne campaign in Four Corners during April 2015 with the next-generation Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (near-infrared) and Hyperspectral Thermal Emission Spectrometer (thermal infrared) imaging spectrometers to better understand the source of methane by measuring methane plumes at 1- to 3-m spatial resolution. Our analysis detected more than 250 individual methane plumes from fossil fuel harvesting, processing, and distributing infrastructures, spanning an emission range from the detection limit ∼ 2 kg/h to 5 kg/h through ∼ 5,000 kg/h. Observed sources include gas processing facilities, storage tanks, pipeline leaks, and well pads, as well as a coal mine venting shaft. Overall, plume enhancements and inferred fluxes follow a lognormal distribution, with the top 10% emitters contributing 49 to 66% to the inferred total point source flux of 0.23 Tg/y to 0.39 Tg/y. With the observed confirmation of a lognormal emission distribution, this airborne observing strategy and its ability to locate previously unknown point sources in real time provides an efficient and effective method to identify and mitigate major emissions contributors over a wide geographic area. With improved instrumentation, this capability scales to spaceborne applications [Thompson DR, et al. (2016) Geophys Res Lett 43(12):6571–6578]. Further illustration of this potential is demonstrated with two detected, confirmed, and repaired pipeline leaks during the campaign.
