Notes: To aid in artificial spawning of sciaenid fishes, the present authors developed techniques to collect, handle and cryopreserve sperm from red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus L. Sperm were collected by removing and slicing the testis, and adding Hanks' balanced salt solution (HBSS) or NaCl solution (each at 200-400 mOsm kg−1) as an extender. Sperm were activated with 800 mOsm kg−1 artificial sea water (ASW) to characterize motility. Sperm reached maximum motility (highest percentage motility observed for that sample) within 8 ± 1 s (mean ± SD) and remained at maximum motility for 33 ± 4 s. Sperm were exposed to graded osmotic pressures of ASW (8-800 mOsm kg−1) to determine the range of osmolalities that elicited motility. Threshold activation (defined as ∼10% motility) occurred at 351 ± 4 mOsm kg−1 and complete activation occurred at 539 ± 2 mOsm kg−1. Sperm stored at 200 mOsm kg−1 retained motility for up to 13 days. Dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) was used as a cryoprotectant at concentrations ranging from 7.5% to 15% (v:v) in HBSS (200 mOsm kg−1). There were no significant differences among post-thaw motilities of sperm cryopreserved at any concentration of DMSO. Sperm thawed on the benchtop at 21°C had lower post-thaw motility than did sperm thawed at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60°C in a water bath.

Notes: Flowering behaviour of plants of six cultivars of Trifolium repens (Kent Wild White, Grasslands Huia, S100, Blanca, Olwen and Milkanova) growing in field plots at the Grassland Research Institute, Hurley, was recorded in mid-July. Half of each plot had been defoliated in early May, the other half in mid-June. In all cultivars defoliated in May, inflorescence initiation had stopped even though the natural photoperiod at that time was well above the critical daylength for initiation Defoliation in mid-June had led to a renewal of inflorescence initiation in all cultivars. The results confirm that the stimulatory effect of defoliation on inflorescence initiation in plants that have stopped initiation in long days, which has previously been observed in Grasslands Huia in controlled environments, also occurs in the field and in other cultivars.

Notes: [Auszug] In natural summer conditions monoecious plants of Mercurialis ambigua L. fil. produce one female flower and a cluster of male flowers in each leaf axil. Ten plants were grown in 24.hr. photoperiods and thirteen in 8-hr, photoperiods throughout their lives at day temperatures of 26 32 C. and night ...

Notes: [Auszug] Qualitative tests showed that graphite swelled to almost twice its original size when warmed with its own volume of chromyl chloride. Even after thorough washing with carbon tetrachloride, in which chromyl chloride is readily soluble, a substance which analysis showed to be chromyl chloride could ...

Notes: [Auszug] Tso2 has shown that fatty acids will inhibit the auxiliary bud development of Nicotiana tabacum plants and that the methyl esters of acids C8-C14 were particularly effective in this capacity. The acid fraction of petrichor-containing extracts, which has been analysed in some detail, consists of a ...

Notes: [Auszug] THAT many natural dry clays and soils evolve a peculiar and characteristic odour when breathed on, or moistened with water, is recognized by all the earlier text-books of mineralogy. References to this 'argillaceous odour' are, however, greatly confused by the inclusion of data relating to various ...

Notes: Abstract The nature and kinetics of the δ-ferrite transformation in a series of duplex submerged arc 316 L weld metals has been studied under creep conditions at 600° C and an applied stress of 200 MN m−2. The δ-ferrite was found to transform first to M23C6 carbides, these occurring at either the δ/γ interface or within the δ-ferrite laths depending upon the presence of suitable nucleation sites. The remaining δ-ferrite then transforms to the intermetallic σ-phase. The kinetics of the intermetallic phase formation varied between the different welds, and STEM/EDAX analysis indicated that the kinetics were dependent on the localized segregations of chromium, nickel and molybdenum in the δ-ferrite laths. A transformation model has been developed which indicates that chromium diffusion within the γ matrix is the controlling mechanism.

Notes: Abstract The influence of stress relieving and ageing treatments in the range 600 to 900° C on the phase transformations and change in room temperature impact properties has been studied for two manual metal arc 17-8-2 weld metals. The transformation of theδ-ferrite in the range 600 to 800° C was found to conform to a classical Johnson-Mehl equation; the initial precipitates were M23C6 carbides followed by the intermetallicχ-phase. At higher temperatures a slower transformation rate was found suggesting a “C” curve type of behaviour and the dominant intermetallic phase changed toσ. Room temperature impact toughness values were found to change with ageing time. Below 800° C there was a consistent fall in these values which became very marked when theχ-phase developed at theγ/δ-boundaries, Above 800° C, spherodization of the carbides and intermetallic phases delayed the fall in the impact values, and led to significant increases in the early stages of ageing. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed that the change from ductile to brittle fracture mode was normally associated with the development of theσ andχ phases, but at 600° C the fall in impact properties could be atrributed to carbide development.
