Notes: Abstract The paper is concerned with the free boundary problem of a semi-infinite body with an arbitrarily prescribed initial condition and an arbitrarily prescribed flux at its face. An analytically exact solution to the problem is found and established, which is expressed in terms of some functions and polynomials of the error integral family and timet. Convergence of the series solution is considered and proved. For illustration, the solution is applied to a special problem, which is discussed in detail. Some remarks about the solution are also included.

Notes: Abstract The paper is concerned with determination of the solution of the one-dimensional heat equation in a semi-infinite region subject to a nonlinear boundary condition at the surface. The exact solution is obtained and is expressed in infinite series. It is shown that the series is absolutely and uniformly convergent. Two special cases of Newton's cooling and of Stefan-Boltzmann's radiation at the boundary are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The problem of solidification of a binary mixture in a semi-infinite region with arbitrarily prescribed initial temperature and composition subject to an arbitrary heat flux at its surface is studied. The liquidus and solidus lines of the phase diagram are used to relate the freezing temperature and the composition of the mixture. Solidification, depending on the prescribed data, could occur immediately or at a later time. In the latter case, there is a period of presolidification. Thus the initial condition of the subsequent solidification cannot be assigned arbitrarily; in particular, it cannot be taken as a uniform state. The conditions for occurrence of these cases are studied and specified. The exact solutions for each of these are found. Existence, uniqueness and convergence of the series solutions are also considered and proved.

Notes: Abstract The Stefan problem of a semi-infinite body with arbitrarily prescribed initial and boundary conditions is studied. One of the objectives of the paper is to investigate the analyticity of the solutions. For this purpose, the prescribed initial and boundary conditions are considered to be series of fractional powers of their arguments. It is found that the exact solutions of the problem for various forms of the initial and boundary conditions can be established in series of parabolic cylinder functions and time t. Existence and convergence of the series solutions are studied and proved. The present solutions include the known exact solutions as special cases. On the basis of the present solutions, the question of the analyticity of solutions of the Stefan problem, raised by Rubinstein in his book, can be answered. Conditions for analyticity of the solutions with various initial and boundary conditions are fully discussed.

Notes: Summary The absorption of gas into a liquid is modeled by a diffusion equation with a nonlinear boundary condition. The formulation is mathematically unusual. Even without any prescribed data, a unique solution exists. The exact solution is obtained in an infinite series of parabolic cylinder functions. The existence, uniqueness and convergence of the series solution are considered and proved. The exact solution for the case with an arbitrary initial condition is also found. These two solutions are mathematically unrelated in the sense that the former is not a limiting case of the latter. The paper concludes with a discussion on the analyticity of these two solutions.

Notes: Summary This paper is concerned with the problem of confined laminar jet-mixing in a circular channel. The Navier-Stokes equations are linearized patterned after an approach proposed bySparrow, Lin, andLundgren in their study of laminar flow development in a channel. After linearization, the governing equation becomes an integro-differential equation. The exact solution is found for the case of two uniform streams each occupying half of a circular channel. Additionally a variational formulation of the same problem is established, completely equivalent to the differential formulation. This variational formulation is constructed based upon the use of convolutions. Approximate variational solutions are obtained. It develops that a simple two-term approximation gives excellent agreement with the exact solution.

Notes: Summary The problem of solidification of two semi-infinite materials with arbitrarily prescribed initial conditions is studied. This is different from the classical Stefan problem; there are no prescribed boundary conditions. It is found that there are, depending on the prescribed initial conditions, four different possibilities: (i) solidification starts immediately and the interfacial boundary is of the order oft 1/2 ast→0, (ii) solidification also starts immediately but the interfacial boundary is of an order other thant 1/2, (iii) no solidification will ever occur, and (iv) there is a pre-solidification period during which the temperatures of both materials are redistributed and solidification will occur only after the surface temperature has reached the freezing point. Conditions for the occurrence of these cases are examined and established. The exact solutions for each of these cases are derived and discussed.

Notes: Summary The heat transfer problems of combined free and forced convection by a fully developed laminar flow in a vertical tube and a vertical sector channel of linear axial wall temperature gradient with and without heat generation are treated. By means of a complex function the coupled momentum and energy equations are combined in the form of a wave equation in the complex domain. Exact solutions are then established in terms of Bessel and associated functions. Some numerical calculations and discussions are also included.
