Notizen: The proton magnetic resonance relaxation times and heat capacity of water in perfluoroethylene sulfonic acid (Nafion), chlorosulfonated polyethylene (SPE), and sulfonated polysulfone (SPS) were measured as a function of temperature. Only the relaxation data for water present in Nafion conformed to the BPP model. The data indicate that the presence of fine pores, ∼12 Å in diameter, causes water-surface interactions to play a significant role. For materials with the same pore size, a difference in spin-lattice relaxation time T1 may be correlated to the Flory-Huggins parameter χ calculated for the interaction of water with the neutral portion of the polymer backbone. Only a part of the water present in Nafion and SPE undergoes freezing, while no transition was observed for water in SPS for temperatures down to -60°C. For Nafion and SPE, the heat of fusion ΔHf calculated from combined FID data and the DSC study was ⋍20 cal/g.

Notizen: Measurements of glass transition temperature, small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been applied to the study of ionic heterogeneities in sulfonated polysulfone (SPS) films. The SAXS study confirms the existence of heterogeneities in the electron density distribution, whose appearence for the Cs+1, Ca+2, and Fe+3 forms of SPS but not for H+ suggests that the scattering centers are ion-containing regions. However, a TEM study could not detect the existence of microseparated regions down to a level of 50 Å and the Tg behavior as a function of IEC was more typical of that for random copolymers. A Mössbauer study, performed earlier by Heitner-Wirguin et al. on samples of our material, indicated the existence of clusters ∼35-40 Å in diameter.

Notizen: The surface concentration of polymer molecules in solution has been combined with the three-component bulk-phase diagram of Strathmann et al. to describe the complete equilibrium thermodynamic precasting situation. The polymer surface concentration is estimated according to the theory of Prigogine and Marechal as used by Siow and Patterson, and is governed by the relative values of the polymer and solvent surface tension, γp and γs respectively. In general, when γp 〉 γs, the cast membrane will tend to form with the asymmetric layer on the support side; for γp 〈 γs it will tend to form on the gelation bath side. This was found to be the case for several cellulose acetate casting solutions, including the acetone/formamide mixture of Manjikian. The surface tension of cellulose acetate in the latter mixture appeared to be much lower than in single solvents such as DMSO. The effects of surface tension were used to prepare asymmetric gels of poly(phenylene oxide) and nylon 11 by cooling high-temperature solutions in which γs 〉 γp at the gel transition point.

Notizen: The formation of hydrous Zr(IV) oxide-polyacrylate dynamic membranes was studied by the dependence of water flux decline and steady-state water flux on the concentration of poly(acrylic acid) in the feed. Analysis of the results indicates that the poly(acrylic acid) enters the pores of the hydrous Zr(IV) oxide layer, rather than forming a second layer. This configuration was consistent with scanning electron micrographs of the surface.

Notizen: We propose a theory for the appearance of two-phase structures during the formation of polymer membranes from a casting solution immersed in a coagulant bath. Our model is based on diffusion induced phase separation at the spinodal in the ternary nonsolvent-solvent-polymer system. A simplified treatment of the interdiffusion process by the diffusion layer method permits the formulation of criteria for the formation of two-phase structures in the course of the solvent-coagulant exchange. Our criteria are expressed in terms of the composition dependence of the chemical potentials in the stable and metastable region of the ternary phase diagram. Comparison with experimental results shows qualitative similarities with theoretical predictions.
