Notes: Abstract Detecting active sonar returns in multipath media is a central underwater signal processing problem. This paper studies a new approach to active sonar detection using bispectral analysis of sonar data. Its sensitivity to non-stationarities is used to develop a threshold detector that can be applied to broad classes of signals and noise. Precise statistical descriptions of the underwater medium and noise are not required. Theoretical analyses predicting its performance as a function of signal-to-noise ratio and time-bandwidth product are presented. Computer simulation experiments verify the results and show that its performance compares favorably to that of conventional detectors.

Notes: Abstract We study implementation problems involved with certain adaptive filters requiring high speed matrix-vector multiplies of the formTw, whereT isn×n Toeplitz andw is ann×1 vector. We solve the problem using a novel and simple matrix decomposition of the formT=C+S, whereC is circulant and5 is “factor” circulant.C andS support fast Fourier transform implementations of all basic matrix computations. The decomposition can also be used to implement the productT 1 T 2 with fast Fourier transform algorithms.

Notes: Abstract We develop a generalized singular value decomposition methodology for implementing the estimator-correlator array processor. The usefulness of this structure stems from two key properties examined in this paper. First, the structure is canonical, in that it applies to a broad class of underwater signal processing problems. Second, it is robust, not critically dependent on a precise characterization of the medium in question. Numerical simulation experiments justifying this claim are presented. Specific examples demonstrate the general implementation procedure. Although the results are computationally demanding, they can in large part be realized with parallel architectures. Hence, their implementation by dedicated processors is possible.

Notes: Abstract Complex Wishart matrices are a key part of many multidimensional signal processing algorithms, and expectations of expressions containing them are needed to quantify their performance. In this paper we derive concise formulas forE{WAW},E{W −1 AW −1}, and other useful expressions, whereW follows the complex Wishart distribution andA is a deterministic matrix.A need not be symmetric. We show how the results can be used to quantify the performance of adaptive array processing algorithms.

Description: This paper studies a memory-based pulse shaping and traveling wave tube precompensation technique applied to high data rate satellite communications. Baseband I and Q waveforms are synthesized from data stored in a distributed arithmetic architecture. The waveforms are adjusted to minimize intersymbol interference spectral bandwidth and traveling wave tube distortion. We evaluate its performance in a simulated bi-phase shift keying (BPSK) link. The results show that memory-based precompensation has great potential to improve link performance.
