Notes: [Auszug] Crystalline samples of 12HOA were prepared as described previously2. Solutions of chiral 12HOA in CC14 set to an almost transparent jelly above 13 mmol I"1 at 20 C, while solutions of racemic 12HOA showed no gelation until they deposited crystals from a saturated solution. The thin preparations of ...

Notes: [Auszug] A sample of 6-nylon (poly-e-capramide, D.P.153) was spread from its mixed solution in benzene-phenol (3/1 v/v) on the surface of distilled water in a Langmuir trough. The uncompressed and compressed films were transferred to a collodionsupport by using a lifted film technique2 for building up films ...

Notes: Summary Aggregates of poly-γ-benzyl-d (orl-glutamate were precipitated by mixing of its solution in dimethylformamide or dioxane with propionic acid. Electron micrographs showed that the aggregates were composed of well-developed helical fibrils. The sence of helix was right-handed for thed-isomer and left-handed for thel-isomer; an enantiomorphic relation was shown for the helical aggregate of optical active macromolecule. Two recent publications have given conflicting results for the helical sense of the aggregate. This seems to be ascribed to carelessness in determining the helical sense from the electron micrographs.

Notes: Summary Monolayers of various synthetic polymers were spread at the air-water interface and they were subjected to a constant shear stress by means of a surface rheometer. The types of the strain time curve thus obtained were peculiar to a given film and represented by the corresponding mechanical model. From the rheological characteristics of films, they were arranged into five groups. The gelation area, i. e. the smallest area at which films begin to aquire any viscoelasticity during compression, was also specific to a given film. It was found that films of crystalline polymer gelify at an area larger than close-packed area. The force-area curves of polymer films were discussed from the rheological standpoint.

Notes: Summary It was found that surface films of high polymers on which ripple was produced reduce the surface pressure, surface potential and surface elasticity immediately after the cease of ripple, and recover gradually their original value by subsequent rest. This phenomenon was attributed not to the re-adsorption of film molecules displaced from surface phase into substrate water by wave motion of water, but to a two dimensional gel/ sol/gel transformation induced by ripple and subsequent rest (surface thixotropy).

Notes: Summary A new method was developed for preparing an aqueous colloidal dispersion ofΒ-carotene. This method consists of preparing a solid mixture ofΒ-carotene and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) from their chloroform solution by evaporating the solvent and dissolving the mixture into water. From filtration experiment and electron microscopic observation it was found thatΒ-carotene in its aqueous dispersion exists as colloidal particles with a diameter of about 100 å. Spectroscopic data evidenced thatΒ-carotene is molecularly dispersed in solid of PVP. It was considered that PVP acts as a solid solvent forΒ-carotene and, at the same time, a stabilizing agent for its aqueous dispersion. Instead of PVP, such a hydrophilic-oleophilic substance as methylcellulose, polyvinylmethylether or Aerosol OT could be also used as the dispersing agent. Other materials thanΒ-carotene could be dispersed by similar technique.
