    Notes: Abstract The influence of Malmquist bias on the studies of extragalactic distances is reviewed, with brief glimpses of the history from Kapteyn to Scott. Special attention is paid to two kinds of biases, for which the names Malmquist biases of the first and second kind are proposed. The essence of these biases and the situations where they occur are discussed. The bias of the first kind is related to the classical Malmquist bias (involving the "volume effect"), while the bias of the second kind appears when standard candles are observed at different (true) distances, whereby magnitude limit cuts away a part of the luminosity function. In particular, study of the latter bias in distance indicators such as Tully Fisher, available for large fundamental samples of galaxies, allows construction of an unbiased absolute distance scale in the local galaxy universe where approximate kinematic relative distances can be derived. Such investigations, using the method of normalized distances or of the Spaenhauer diagram, support the linearity of the Hubble law and make it possible to derive an unbiased value of the Hubble constant.

    Notes: Abstract In the maps of the galactic structure based on the kinematical method, several systematic heliocentric anomalies are found: in the northern galactic hemisphere the spiral arms are more tightly wound and the extent of neutral hydrogen is smaller than in the southern hemisphere; with separate rotation curves for the north and the south the arms become anomalously circular with a consequent discrepancy to the stellar distribution; there are straight portions in the arms pointing towards the Sun, as well as systematic strong curvatures and knee-like features; the inner arms affect the structure of the outer arms; with the northern rotation model, Hii-regions and Hi avoid the southern tangential circle; in the rear of the Galaxy, at symmetric longitudes, enhanced Hi-densities are found; the Perseus arm is displaced atl=180°. All of these anomalies can be explained with a simple model involving a non-velocity redshift field within the Galaxy, with an enhancement within the spiral arms. This is demonstrated by numerical simulations of the structural anomalies. Reducing the redshift effect from the kinematic data, the Galaxy's structure and kinematics appear symmetric. The significance of the result for the redshift problem is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The relevance of the galactic reddeningsE(B-V) derived by Teerikorpi (1978, 1981) from ScI galaxies and quasars, is further confirmed by considerations of close pairs in the sky, the Lick counts, and the counts/NHi ratio. The compact dust clouds suggested by Teerikorpi (1981) could not be detected directly by the counts. However, the counts/NHi ratio showed a behaviour expected if the reddenings really describe the division of the dust in the Local Spiral into compact clouds and a more diffuse medium, in the way suggested in the previous study.

    Notes: Abstract The correlation betweenE(B-V) reddenings of high latitude radio quasars (from Teerikorpi, 1981) and star/galaxy counts from the PSA prints was investigated. With the resolution down to 5′×5′, the reddenings and the counts show the relationship expected if it is assumed that most of the high latitude stars (B〈21 mag) are situated above the dust clouds. The dust causing the reddenings is probably connected with the population of molecular clouds observed at high galactic latitudes. The present study underlines the importance of simple star/galaxy counts (all images counted) for the study of high latitude variable extinction. The existence of variable extinction shows that also the average extinction must be significant.
