Description: Repetitive activation of excitatory synapses in the hippocampus produces a persistent enhancement of synaptic efficiency known as long-term potentiation (LTP). In anesthetized and in freely moving rats, the induction of LTP in the perforant path led to a transient increase in the amount of messenger RNA (mRNA) coding for a presynaptic glutamate receptor (GR33) in dentate granule cells. The amount of GR33 mRNA was increased for at least 5 hours after the induction of LTP but was indistinguishable from control values 1 day after induction. The N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist 2-aminophosphonovalerate prevented the induction of both LTP and the increase in GR33 mRNA. The amount of GR33 protein was increased in the mossy fiber terminal zone of dentate granule cells 5 hours after the induction of LTP. These results suggest that the induction of LTP in synapses at one stage in a neural network may lead to modification in synaptic function at the next stage in the network.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Smirnova, T -- Laroche, S -- Errington, M L -- Hicks, A A -- Bliss, T V -- Mallet, J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science.

Description: Glutamate receptors mediate excitatory neurotransmission in the brain and are important in the formation of memory and in some neurodegenerative disorders. A complementary DNA clone that encoded a 33-kilodalton protein (GR33) was obtained by screening a library with an antibody generated against glutamate binding proteins. The sequence of GR33 is identical to that of the recently reported presynaptic protein syntaxin. When GR33 was expressed in Xenopus oocytes, it formed glutamate-activated ion channels that are pharmacologically similar to those of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors but with different electrophysiological properties. Mutation of the leucine 278 residue in the single putative transmembrane segment of GR33 affects the properties of the channel. Thus, in vivo GR33 may be a presynaptic glutamate receptor.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Smirnova, T -- Stinnakre, J -- Mallet, J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science.

Notes: Abstract The variability of the radio source associated with the gamma-ray burst of May 8, 1997, detected using the VLA, is analyzed. This variability can be explained as weak scintillations at 4.86 and 8.46 GHz and the refractive component of saturated scintillations at 1.43 GHz. Possible distances for the source are discussed. The scintillation parameters are in best agreement with the observations if the source is at a cosmological distance and has an angular size ∼2 microarcseconds (µas) at 4.86 GHz and an expansion speed of the order of 25 µas/year.

Notes: Abstract Data are presented from studies of the temperature dependence of the diffraction efficiency and radiation resistance of volume phase hologram/transmission gratings. The reversible diffraction efficiencies are described by the phase equilibrium diagram for the polymer-diffusate system. The radiation resistance of these hologram/gratings is determined by the thresholds for photothermolytic decay of the diffusate, bromonaphthalene, that was used. Composites containing diffusates with high thresholds for photolysis and thermolysis are studied. As a result, modified versions of the photopolymer recording medium with radiation resistances exceeding 200 MW/cm2 are proposed.

Notes: Abstract The results of the investigation of recording Fourier phase holograms on a self-developing photopolymer photosensitive in the range λ=400–515 nm are presented. It has been found that, due to the transient energy transfer between the beams, noise gratings are recorded, and a corresponding sharp reduction in the signal-to-noise ratio occurs, while the diffraction efficiency of the hologram as a whole remains relatively high (above 50%). It has been found that the noise-grating recording can be substantially suppressed by increasing the intensity of the reference beam relative to the intensity of the object beam. In this way, the signal-to-noise ratio has been considerably improved for Fourier holograms of binary phase masks: at a reference to object beam intensity ratio R=26, Fourier phase holograms are recorded with a diffraction efficiency η=15% and signal-to-noise ratio N=20 dB.

Notes: Summary 1. A study was mad of the polycondensation of dichloromethane with benzene in presence of aluminum chloride. 2. It was shown that in the polycondensation of dichloromethane with benzene a polymer is formed which contains dihydroanthracene residues. The presence of these residues in the polymer chain results in the arrest of chain growth and hinders the formation of branched and three-dimensional polymers.

Notes: Summary 1. m-and p-chloro derivatives and m-and p-fluoro derivatives of diphenylmethane were synthesized and it was shown that they undergo the transarylation reaction on being heated in the presence of aluminum chloride. m-Chloro-, m-fluoro-and p-fluorodiphenylmethanes were synthesized for the first time. 2. It was found that the halogen atoms located in para-position relative to the methylene group of diphenylmethane weaken the bond between the methylene group and the substituted atomatic nucleus; the halogen atoms located in meta-position relative to the methylene group do not exert any influence on the strength of this bond.
