Notes:
Summary A method, new in principle, has been developed for the determination of trace amounts of silica, by separation and accumulation of the silicon content of the matrix in a solid state reaction with ammonium fluoride without fusion. A high-frequency oven is used to start the reaction at 200° C and finish it at 380° C. A fivefold excess of ammonium fluoride is necessary. The volatile product of the reaction, containing silicon, is transported by nitrogen, into an alkaline solution and absorbed quantitatively. The silicate formed can be measured directly as reduced β-silicomolybdic acid or concentrated further by extraction of the heteropoly acid with n-butanol, followed by reduction with ascorbic acid. The hydrogen ion/molybdate molar ratio should be 2.0–2.2 and the interfering effect of fluoride ions is eliminated by addition of a twentyfold excess of boric acid. The practical lower limit of the analysis for the liquid-liquid extraction procedure is 10−4% silicon.
