Notes: The coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) and coherent Stokes Raman scattering (CSRS) line shapes near the 1350 cm−1 region of acridine in the T1 state were recorded in the various resonance (ω1 frequency) conditions over the Tn←T1 absorption band in the n-heptane solution at room temperature. The ω1 frequency dependencies of CARS and CSRS line shapes of the T1 signal at 1368 cm−1 were simulated well on the basis of the theoretical χ(3) expression. On the other hand, the ω1 frequency dependence of the line shape of the extra resonance (ER) signal observed at 1335 cm−1 in CSRS, showing no obvious change of the line shape by changing the ω1 frequencies, could not be simulated at all on the basis of the similar expression. The discrepancy of the ER line-shape simulation was discussed.

Notes: During the course of diamond growth by dc plasma chemical vapor deposition, characteristics of the plasma have been measured by means of the Langmuir single probe method and emission spectrometry. For the source gas system of hydrogen and methane (gas ratio: CH4/H2=2/100, total gas pressure: 2.66×104 Pa), it is revealed that the statistical temperatures of hydrogen atoms and electrons in the positive column of the plasma are obtained to be 4.8×103–5.3×103 K and 1×105–1.1×105 K, respectively. The amount of ionized species is fairly small. By calculating the equilibrium constant of gas molecules in these gas temperature ranges, it is found that molecules over 99% H2 and CH4 are decomposed to the neutral H and C atoms.

Notes: Abstract CHIME (chemical Th-U-total Pb isochron method) ages were determined for monazite from gneisses and granitoids of the Ryoke belt in the Iwakuni area. The CHIME monazite ages are 99.6 ± 2.4, 98.9 ± 2.1 and 98.2 ± 5.7 Ma for the Ryoke gneiss, 90.7 ± 2.2, 89.7 ± 2.0 and 89.3 ± 2.2 Ma for the Tajiri Granite, 91.0 ± 3.2, 90.6 ± 3.2 and 89.9 ± 3.2 Ma for the Namera Granite, 89.3 ±3.3 and 88.6 ± 5.6 Ma for a small stock at Shimizu, and 87.3 ± 1.6 and 86.6 ± 2.1 Ma for the post-tectonic Shimokuhara Granite. The CHIME monazite ages, interpreted as the time of the first attainment at the amphibolite facies conditions for the gneisses and as the time of emplacement for the granites, respectively, agree with the field intrusive sequence. The present dating documented that the Ryoke metamorphism in the Iwakuni area reached the amphibolite facies conditions at ∼98 Ma, was complete at -87 Ma, the time of emplacement of the post-tectonic Shimokuhara Granite.

Notes: Abstract The chemical Th-U-total Pb isochron method (CHIME) was applied to determine the age of monazite and thorite in five gneisses and zircon in an ultra high-pressure (UHP) phengite schist from the Su-Lu region, eastern China. The CHIME ages and isotopic ages reported in the literature show that gneisses in the Su-Lu region are divided into middle Proterozoic (1500–1720 Ma) and Mesozoic (100–250 Ma) groups. The Proterozoic group includes paragneiss and orthogneiss of the amphibolite-granulite facies, and their protolith age is late Archean-early Proterozoic. The Mesozoic group is mainly composed of orthogneiss of the greenschist-epidote amphibolite facies, and the protolith age is Middle Paleozoic-Early Proterozoic. The Proterozoic and Mesozoic gneisses occupy northern and southern areas of the Su-Lu region, respectively, which are divided by a major Wulian-Qingdao-Yantai fault. Ultra high-pressure metamorphic rocks occur as blocks in the Mesozoic gneisses, and form a UHP complex. The UHP phengite schist in the Mesozoic orthogneiss contains detrital zircons with late Proterozoic CHIME age (ca 860 Ma). Age of the UHP metamorphism is late Proterozoic or younger, and protolith age of the UHP metamorphic rocks is probably different from that of the surrounding Mesozoic gneisses.

Notes: [Auszug] Semaphorins are axon guidance factors that assist growing axons in finding appropriate targets and forming synapses. Emerging evidence suggests that semaphorins are involved not only in embryonic development but also in immune responses. Semaphorin 7A (Sema7A; also known as CD108), which is a ...

Notes: [Auszug] Semaphorins are a family of phylogenetically conserved soluble and transmembrane proteins. Although many soluble semaphorins deliver guidance cues to migrating axons during neuronal development, some members are involved in immune responses. For example, CD100 (also known as Sema4D), a class IV ...

Notes: Abstract The contact aureole around the Kaizuki-yama granite, recognized with a width of more than 3 km, ranges from the greenschist to the amphibolite facies. Dolomite and quartz in siliceous dolomites started to react at the lower grade part of the amphibolite facies. The increase of metamorphic grade brought three-, four- and five-mineral assemblages, with calcite, talc, tremolite, diopside and forsterite arriving successively. The four- and five-mineral assemblages can be related to divariant and univariant assemblages respectively in the system CaO-MgO-SiO2-CO2-H2O, and are considered to represent components of reactions that buffered the chemistry of intergranular fluids. The dolomite-calcite solvus geothermometry gives temperatures 465 ° C for the assemblage dolomite-quartz-talc-tremolite-calcite, 555 ° C for the assemblage dolomite-quartz-tremolite-diopside-calcite, and 595 ° C for the assemblage dolomite-tremolite-diopside-forsterite-calcite. Equilibrium fluid pressures, calculated with available experimental data, are 2.6 kb for the first five-mineral assemblage, and 3.5 kb for the latter two. Fluid compositions were controlled by reactions in each local system, but changed toward a water-rich one when the reactions ceased. The fluid pressures as distinct from the possible rock pressures and the controlling of the fluid composition by reactions are interpreted in terms of the ratio of reaction to fluid migration. Of a skarn zone developed around a chert nodule its mineralogy and deduced composition of the fluids enabled to estimate the size of the microdomain in which equilibrium was maintained. It is of millimeter size. Equilibrium systems of larger sizes are concluded to represent overlapped microdomains of a size.

Notes: Abstract An unusual association of chromite and hornblende was found in the spessartites of andesite composition, occurring as a dike swarm associated with a Cretaceous granite batholith. The spessartites are largely porphyritic with phenocrysts of either hornblende or augite. One dike, comprising a finegrained spessartite, exhibits distinct chilled selvages of aphanitic facies. The chromites in the fine-grained and augite-spessartites are significantly higher in Cr/ (Cr+Al) than those occurring rarely as inclusions in the phenocrystic hornblendes in the hornblende spessartite, although both are similar in Mg/ (Mg+Fe), Fe2O3, and TiO2. The phenocrystic hornblendes are titaniferous pargasite with high Mg/ (Mg+Fe), and differ in their higher octahedral Al from the groundmass hornblendes including those in the fine-grained spessartite. The crystallization sequence in the phenocrystic hornblende-bearing spessartites is Al-rich chromite, phenocrystic hornblende, and plagioclase without pyroxene, suggesting a high water content in the magma and the start of the crystallization at relatively high pressures. The finegrained spessartite from which the porphyritic spessartites have been derived by fractionation of dominant mafic minerals, has the high Mg-value and Cr content equivalent to those in primitive, undifferentiated basalts, although still andesitic in SiO2 content. Chemically similar magnesian andesites, although uncommon, found in some orogenic calc-alkalic suites may represent a magma composition in equilibrium with mantle peridotite under the condition of high water pressures.

Notes: Polyesters and polyamides with pendant N-alkylpyridinio-4-ylmethyl groups and definite spacer length between the pyridinio groups were prepared. It was found that the polyesters generally exhibit higher antibacterial activity than the corresponding monomers. Furthermore, the longer the alkyl chain length attached to the nitrogen of the pyridine ring, the higher is the antimicrobial activity. Polyamides with various spacer length were fractionated by gel filtration chromatography to obtain samples with comparable average molecular weights. Antimicrobial assessment of the fractionated polyamide samples demonstrated the existence of an optimum spacer length for lethal action.
