Abstract This article examines the opening, in an ideal fluid, of an axisymmetric impermeable shell modeling the canopy of a circular parachute. The form of the shell is determined in the class of shapes representing the combination of a truncated cone and an ellipsoid. The forces of interaction of the shell and the fluid are calculated on the basis of the method of discrete vortices. A Lagrange equation of the second kind is used to determine the time-varying coordinates of the generatrix. Numerical results are presented.
