    Notes: The growing importance of the service sector in almost every economy in the world has created a significant amount of interest in service operations. In practice, many service sectors have sought and made use of various enhancement programs to improve their operations and performance in an attempt to hold competitive success. As most researchers recognize, service operations link with customers. The customers as participants act in the service operations system driven by the goal of sufficing his/her added values. This is one of the distinctive features of service production and consumption. In the paper, first, we propose the idea of service operations improvement by mapping objectively the service experience of customers from the view of customer journey. Second, a portraying scheme of service experience of customers based on the IDEF3 technique is proposed, and last, some implications on service operations improvement are given.

    Notes: Customized product development is facing the challenges of maintaining mass producibility and exploring customer perception on target products. This paper reports an approach by combining virtual prototyping (VP) with design by manufacturing simulation techniques. By constructing virtual prototypes, accurate assessments of mass producibility and customer acceptance will enable better informed design of customized products. The primary goal of VP for customized product development is to provide a multidisciplinary design definition and rapid prototyping environment for concept development and a tailored, scenario-based simulation environment for concept evaluation within a single facility. This design environment facilitates the capture and utilization of information generated during the design phase, and the simultaneous generation, at design time, of manufacturing, materials, costing, and scheduling data, together with visual evaluation of customer perception on target products, hence supporting the implementation of concurrent engineering.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we describe our development of a fully integrated manufacturing planning assistant (IMPA) system, which is able to: (1) interpret the finished part requirements directly from the designer's CAD systems or solid modelers without user intervention or special feature coding; (2) check the machinability of a designed part; (3) automatically generate a process plan, a tool path and an NC (numerically controlled) code, and (4) support interactive user modification of the resulting plans, tool paths and NC code. A demonstration version of the system was designed to provide automated assistance for the planning of machining processes on three-axes NC machine tools. The underlying architectural concepts and reasoning algorithms can be extended to more complex machines such as four-or-more-axes NC machines. CAD, CAE, and CAM including robotic, FMS (flexible manufacturing system) and NC machines are widely used in industry today. There is increasing interest in automation of factory control software Merchant, (1988); this includes automating the generation of the control programs — that is, in developing systems which will automatically produce the NC code for machining the part, given a model of the part, the shape of the raw material, and the machine specifications. With such systems, there are several difficulties in the manual preparation of an NC program code such as, long and tedious calculations, high risk of error in data preparation, etc., which need to be eliminated. This is a critical step toward the integration of CAD and CAM into a truly concurrent engineering and manufacturing environment.

    Notes: Much of the knowledge that is applied in or communicated between design and manufacturing activities is primarily shape based or shape indexed. Previous attempts to acquire and organize shape knowledge have been mostly concentrated on feature recognition from solid models, group technology (GT) coding schemes, and feature-based modeling. This paper presents the development of an efficient form-feature-based modeling system, and addresses the important issue of utilizing feature information for manufacturing, which has not been extensively discussed by previous work. In this paper we first present a Euler operator-based approach for efficient and effective form-feature encoding and manipulation in a feature-based design environment. Subsequently, a hybrid representation scheme called enhanced CSG tree of feature (ECTOF), which integrates feature model with solid model in a tree structure, is discussed. A feature interference resolution methodology to maintain the correct and consistent feature information in an ECTOF is also deliberated. Finally, we present a machinability-checking module, which employs global accessibility criteria to analyze a feature's machinability on a three-axis machining center. By developing feature interference resolving and machinability testing techniques and integrating with an efficient feature-based design system, this research makes the development of an integrated feature-based design and manufacturing system possible.

    Notes: A study was conducted on the effects of donor dopants, Nb2O5 and WO3, on microstructure and electric properties of Bi4Ti3O12 (BIT) ceramics. X-ray diffraction patterns of the materials showed a single orthorhombic phase structure. The microstructure results revealed the appearance of plate-like grain. The donor doping decreased the conductivity of BIT by as much as 3 orders of magnitude. The dielectric and ferroelectric properties of doped-BIT materials were also investigated.The decrease in the electrical conductivity allowed the doped samples to be poled to develop piezoelectricity. Thermal annealing studies of the samples indicated the donor-doped BIT were suitable candidate materials for high-temperature piezoelectric applications

    Notes: Na0.42K0.08Bi0.5TiO3 and Na0.45K0.05Bi0.5TiO3 ceramics were fabricated by the solid-state reaction. The structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. Dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the ceramics were measured and discussed. The ceramics have a single perovskite phase with rhombohedral symmetry at room temperature. The thermal variations of the permittivity follow the law 1/ e − 1/ em = C(T − Tm)2 which is the character of typical relaxferroelectrics, when temperature is higher than the temperature of the maximum of dielectric constant (Tm). The depolarization temperature (Td) of spontaneous polarization is 215oC for Na0.45K0.05Bi0.5TiO3 and 152oC for Na0.42K0.08Bi0.5TiO3 respectively. There exist two different dielectric behaviors of the Na0.42K0.08Bi0.5TiO3 ceramic, without and after poling. Na0.45K0.05Bi0.5TiO3possesses relatively high kt and Td. The use for device application has been indicated

    Notes: A mixed bismuth layer-structured compound, Bi7Ti4NbO21, has been prepared by the conventional solid state reaction. It showed an orthorhombic symmetry with a = 5.4428, b = 5.4043 and c = 29.041 Å by X-ray powder diffraction analysis. The hysteresis loops as a function of temperature were observed with a standardized ferroelectric test system. The remanent polarization and the coercive field of the material at 140°C were 14.06 µC/cm2 and 78.6 kV/cm, respectively.Thermal dependence of dielectric permittivity showed two-phase transitions at around 670°C and 845°C, which were also investigated by TSC and DSC. Finally, piezoelectric properties were obtained with a piezoelectric coefficient d33 = 10 pC/N. It was observed that Bi7Ti4NbO21 underwent a ferroelectric–paraelectric phase transition at 845°C by depolarization experiments

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes a feature-based methodology for generating computer models for analysis from product definition data. Given the product definition data, the development of analysis models of the product suitable for performance analysis is a time-consuming task that requires a considerable level of expertise and tedious feature modifications. A feature-based geometric reasoning technique is developed that can be used to reduce the lead time of analysis of models generated from product definition data and subsequently to shorten the process time of CAE (computer aided engineering) analysis.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes a knowledge-based concurrent engineering approach to automate the activities of the product analysis process. The major focus in this paper is the development of the analysis model from the product specification data. The approach discussed in this paper recognizes the differences between product design and model design. The product specification (or computer-aided design) data can be used as the starting point to build performance models for analysis which, in turn, can be used to generate the appropriate mesh specification. The unconventional approach described in this paper proposes a way to help reduce the difficulty and tedium of the analysis model building and mesh specification tasks in the product analysis process. A description of an AI-based framework to perform the activities of analysis model formulation and mesh specification is provided. Implementation aspects related to analysis model formulation are also addressed.
